Zoë Kravitz Just Pulled Off The Ultimate Cool Girl Wedding
Zoë Kravitz Just Pulled Off The Ultimate Cool Girl Wedding
The official ceremony took place today inside Lenny Kravitz's townhouse in the 16th arrondissement.

Zoë Kravitz was never going to be a traditional bride. Case in point: for her rehearsal dinner at Restaurant Lapérouse in Paris on Friday night, the Big Little Lies star opted for a crochet dress studded with pearls over a matching white bandeau and bike shorts – a custom design from minimalist bridal label Danielle Frankel – accessorized with low-heeled grandma pumps. Her fiancé, Nocturnal Animals actor Karl Glusman, stepped into the venue hand-in-hand with the 30-year-old wearing a more traditional navy suit.

In town to celebrate the forthcoming nuptials? Father Lenny Kravitz and mother Lisa Bonet; her Big Little Lies co-stars Reese Witherspoon, Laura Dern, and Shailene Woodley; and Cara Delevingne and Ashley Benson. According to People, guests dined on lobster millefeuille, sea bass with cannelloni, and poultry with girolle mushrooms, before the newlyweds were presented with a cake topped with ganache, macarons, and their names side-by-side in gold piped icing.
Meanwhile, the official ceremony took place today inside Lenny Kravitz's townhouse in the 16th arrondissement. "I love that it wasn't on an app and that it wasn't on a movie set," Kravitz told Vogue of meeting Glusman in this month's issue. "My friend knew that I wanted to meet someone – not even to get serious, I think just to get laid, to be completely honest with you – and he brought Karl. I instantly felt something – then he turned around and started talking to the blonde girl next to him and I was like, 'Wait, what?' But he later told me that he was just nervous."

The French capital has been rock star Lenny Kravitz's "town" for almost thirty years, and a conservative-looking townhouse has been his home there for thirteen. Just don't be fooled by the exterior, says Sarah Harris.

Given the grand façade of this pristine Parisian townhouse on a secluded street in the 16th arrondissement, two things are immediately surprising. One, that it’s the home of Lenny Kravitz - because wouldn’t you better picture the rock star in a swanky, modern glass penthouse as opposed to this, the former residence of the mayor of Deauville, no less, with embassies for neighbours? And two, that deep in the basement is a boiler room, reached by a precarious stairwell and a warren of dark corridors, transformed into a veritable speakeasy where bottles of vintage Dom Pérignon overburden shelves. The elegant, butter-wouldn’t-melt exterior does not allude to that.

Why Zoë Kravitz Has Had A Lot To Smile About Lately
Big Little Lies star

She may have drawn on her own past to play the troubled adolescent roles that started her career, but today, Zoë Kravitz – about to be married and back on our screens in a star-filled hit series – is a picture of poise. Sarah Harris meets the Big Little Lies star in the July issue of Vogue.

Happiness radiates from Zoë Kravitz, which is no surprise.
Happiness radiates from Zoë Kravitz, which is no surprise. She has had a lot to smile about lately, finds Sarah Harris upon meeting the actor in her sparse, modern home, a former garage in Brooklyn’s Williamsburg. There’s the second season of HBO’s smash hit series Big Little Lies, in which she stars alongside Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon and Shailene Woodley, which airs this month – the same month, in fact, that she weds her boyfriend, Karl Glusman.

She can’t wait to marry the actor, whom she met three years ago via a mutual acquaintance. “I love that it wasn’t on an app and that it wasn’t on a movie set,” she tells Harris. “My friend knew that I wanted to meet someone – not even to get serious, I think just to get laid, to be completely honest with you – and he brought Karl. I instantly felt something – then he turned around and started talking to the blonde girl next to him and I was like, ‘Wait, what?’. But he later told me that he was just nervous.” Having a family is on the cards, but “not any time soon”.

whenever my dad came to collect me, the whole school would swarm the parking lot
Kravitz was brought up by her mother, who gave birth to her at the age of 20, in Topanga Canyon, California, and enjoyed a bucolic childhood – outdoorsy, a mostly vegan diet, no television other than a film at the weekend – with her father coming and going sporadically. “I remember when ‘Fly Away’ was released, whenever my dad came to collect me, the whole school would swarm the parking lot,” she recalls. “I always thought, ‘I know why I’m so excited to see him, because it’s rare for him to pick me up, but why are you all so excited?’”

Zoë Kravitz Wears Saint Laurent To The Big Little Lies Premier
Zoë Kravitz Wears Saint Laurent To The Big Little Lies Premiere & Wins Again
Zoë Kravitz is a Saint Laurent woman through and through

The odds were on that Zoë Kravitz would choose Saint Laurent for the premiere of Big Little Lies series two. After the hype surrounding the heritage brand’s latest ambassadors – including Keanu Reeves and Finn Wolfhard – you’d be forgiven for forgetting the actor is also one of creative director Anthony Vaccarello’s multi-faceted gang.

Except Kravitz is a Saint Laurent woman through and through – she symbolises a rare moment when a fashion house absolutely nails picking the right person to wear its clothes and embody its ethos. So, yes, Kravitz wore exactly what we thought she would wear to the first screening of the much-anticipated sequel of the HBO series, down to the colour (black) and hemline (micro) but if the formula ain’t broke, why fix it?

“I just want to give even more power to women
Style sleuths will recognise the autumn/winter 2019 minidress as part of the offering of glow-in-the-dark Saint Laurent cocktail dresses presented behind a glass wall at the show to heighten the visual effects. On the blue carpet, however, it was simply a dark sequin-strewn showstopper with ruffles bursting out from the left hip. As Vaccarello told Vogue backstage about the construction of his latest collection, “I just want to give even more power to women. She’s not a warrior. She’s not mean. She’s just confident.”

Zoë Kravitz's Best Style Moments
Zoë Kravitz’s Stylist Decodes Her Innately Bohemian But Bourgeois Style

With her fierce sense of style, ultra-cool pedigree and fearless work ethic, Zoë Kravitz has carved out a Hollywood career most can only dream of. As she reprises her role as Bonnie in season two of Big Little Lies, Vogue charts her most magnetic looks to date, from the red carpet to the sidewalks of New York.

Zoë Kravitz has carved out a Hollywood career most can only dream of
Sexiness," Zoë Kravitz once memorably told Vogue, "is not giving a fuck." The daughter of American rock royalty - her father is Lenny Kravitz, her mother, the actress Lisa Bonet - she has earned the respect of Hollywood through sheer persistence and hard work. And, of course, a stunning sense of style that's all her own.

Working since the age of 16, she has ticked off music (she fronted the bands Elevator Fight and Lolawolf) as well as film, with a particularly impressive track record in mutant superhero action flicks (X Men: First Class, After Earth). But it was her role as Bonnie, the yoga instructor, in HBO's critically-acclaimed series Big Little Lies, that put her on the map.

we're going to be seeing a lot more of Kravitz in the coming months
With marriage to her long-term love, Karl Glusman, on the cards in June 2019, plus season two of the series about to air, as well as a performance in the upcoming Hulu series High Fidelity, it's safe to say we're going to be seeing a lot more of Kravitz in the coming months. Swot up on her impeccable style with Vogue's round-up of Zoe Kravitz's best fashion moments.

Boho Bonnie, played by Zoë Kravitz, is struggling with guilt in season 2

The much-anticipated second season of Big Little Lies brings the return of Renata's power wardrobe and Celeste's polished separates – with some significant changes. Emmy-winning costume designer Alix Friedberg reveals how the women's wardrobes reflect their emotional turmoil, and breaks down the style moments to look out for.
Emmy-winning costume designer Alix Friedberg reveals how the women's wardrobes reflect their emotional turmoil
Alix Friedberg is no stranger to murder mysteries. The Big Little Lies costume designer, who was also behind HBO hits True Detective and Sharp Objects, won an Emmy in 2017 for her work on the first season of the show. The TV adaptation of Liane Moriarty’s bestselling novel became a global phenomenon – winning four Golden Globes, turning the Californian coastal town of Monterey into a holiday hotspot and sparking serious real estate envy. It also spawned countless articles about Big Little Lies style tribes, a testament to Friedberg’s impeccable work when dressing the show’s five leads: preppy perfectionist Madeline (Reese Witherspoon), elegant Celeste (Nicole Kidman), high-powered CEO Renata (Laura Dern), boho Bonnie (Zoë Kravitz) and casual Jane (Shailene Woodley). But when returning for the second season, how could she improve upon perfection?

“We’ve already nailed down each woman’s silhouette and colour palette,”
For Friedberg, the answer was simple: if season one was about establishing the characters and their distinctive looks, season two is about watching them unravel. “We’ve already nailed down each woman’s silhouette and colour palette,” she tells Vogue, “but this season, a lot has changed. Some characters aren’t coping well with what happened and others are rising above it. We tried to reflect their emotional journeys through their costumes.” This plays out most noticeably with Celeste, the former lawyer and mother-of-two who is still reckoning with the death of her abusive husband, Perry.

Bonnie, the free-spirited yoga instructor, who feels wholly responsible for the incident. Incorporating flowy kaftans, slinky workout gear, turquoise jewellery and barely-there slip dresses
Also struggling to deal with Perry’s death is Bonnie, the free-spirited yoga instructor, who feels wholly responsible for the incident. Incorporating flowy kaftans, slinky workout gear, turquoise jewellery and barely-there slip dresses, Bonnie’s wardrobe was one of the sartorial highlights of season one. “Her vibe is bohemian, printed and light,” says Friedberg, referencing brands like Anthropologie and Free People. “But she’s really darkened this season and taken on the burden of Perry’s passing.” In place of her usual loosely draped robes and vintage maxi dresses, Bonnie’s look becomes more protective as she hides herself in argyle jumpers and figure-swamping blazers.

Zoë Kravitz knows the silhouettes that work in her favour

Zoë Kravitz knows the silhouettes that work in her favour, and her palette, too: she sticks to a formula of strapless columns and minis, invariably from Saint Laurent, that hug her petite frame, in refined shades of inky black. Occasionally, though, the Big Little Lies actress serves up an unexpected ace we didn't see coming: hothouse pink, say, or prim-and-pristine satin. It works. She's the definition of red-carpet poise - not least because she appears to have amassed a stash of emerald earrings to rival that of Liz Taylor. As she graces the cover of Vogue's July 2019 issue, we rounded up our 10 favourite Kravitz red carpet outings.

Zoë Kravitz Bound For Glory
Zoë Kravitz Bound For Glory
Zoë Kravitz is on the way to making her own name in this world

Emerging from the shadow of her famous parents, her demons, and her desire for normalcy, Zoë Kravitz is on the way to making her own name in this world. But how big—and what kind—of a name does she want it to be?

“My best friend works here, so I’m here a lot,”
Dressed in a black wool coat, green trousers, and round silver sunglasses, with braids down to her waist, the 26-year-old could pass for several kinds of twentysomething Williamsburg denizens, none of whom scream “celebrity.” At eternally hip neighborhood restaurant Cafe Mogador earlier that day, she went unnoticed at a table in the back. Heads didn’t turn. Nobody snapped photos. No one stared, no one whispered about her. “My best friend works here, so I’m here a lot,” Kravitz says. “Sometimes I come in here and pick up her paycheck for her.” If you ask Kravitz, she’d probably say that’s why some of the waitresses greeted her like an old friend, or why one knew exactly what kind of tea she was about to order. She’s a regular.

right now, Kravitz is doing a pretty decent job of selling me on that “normal” life
Over the course of the day, she’ll repeatedly insist that everything in her life is “very normal.” You know how it goes, straight out of the Celebrity Profile Cliché Handbook, wherein the celebrity makes a point of conveying just how “regular” their life is. They order french fries and burgers and are overwhelmingly nice to waiters and manage to keep publicists at bay for an hour or two while reporters get to lap up all the ways they “stay normal.” And right now, Kravitz is doing a pretty decent job of selling me on that “normal” life and how much pride she says she takes in it. She doesn’t have an entourage or a bodyguard; she takes the subway. She goes to the bodega; she washes dishes. The only “bratty” thing about her, she’ll admit, is that she doesn’t do her own laundry (she’s got a housekeeper).

All of this stems from a desire to fit in.
All of this stems from a desire to fit in. “When I was younger,” she admits, “I really wanted to prove to people I was a normal human being, that I was cool, chill.” Some kids wanted to be her friend because of the fame; others ostracized her for it. “When kids were mean, the first thing they’d say is, ‘She thinks she’s so fucking cool because her dad is famous,’” she says. “I just wanted to fit in.” And right now, in this café in Williamsburg, she’s fitting in just fine.

Like her father, she’s making music people are falling for
But just how much she’ll continue to fit in is clearly about to change. Like her father, she’s making music people are falling for (as the lead singer of electropop band Lolawolf). And while Lenny Kravitz played Cinna in The Hunger Games, Zoë Kravitz chews the scenery as the resilient Christina in Insurgent, part of the equally teen-friendly Divergent Series.

Later that weekend in New York, she’s photographed hanging with Drake and Travi$ Scott
Later that weekend in New York, she’s photographed hanging with Drake and Travi$ Scott. A week later in Los Angeles, she’s gliding around Oscars after-parties with Chris Pine. Back in New York during the cover shoot, all of the people in the room—including Kravitz’s own crew of makeup, hair, stylists, et. al.—mob around her to watch as she poses for photos, to the point where a production manager tells the crush of people to back away. The day after, she’s pictured sitting front row at the Alexander Wang Fashion Week show, right next to Nicki, Kanye, and Kim, people so crazily, insanely famous that using their last names is an exercise in redundancy.

how normal she’s going to try to remain
These aren’t very “normal” environs. They’re also the kind she’s appearing in more often than ever. And they demonstrate that Zoë Kravitz is on the precipice of that kind of fame, the one-name fame, the kind that renders all other Zoës (or Zooeys) as those who come after her.

The question then, isn’t how famous she wants to become, but how normal she’s going to try to remain. And whether or not it’ll work.

Zoë Kravitz now 30 with a career that’s soaring
Zoë Kravitz’s Stylist Decodes Her Innately Bohemian But Bourgeois Style
“I’m slowly learning that no director will hire me because of my surname.”

School was hard for her, Kravitz continues: “My peers were wealthy white kids – jocks and cheerleaders – and I felt super alienated. On the cusp of being a teenager you’re trying to figure out who you are, and when there is no reflection of you anywhere you look, you feel like a freak.”

This period contributed to what would become a decade-long eating disorder that began at 13. “I think it came from a lot of things,” she explains. “My mother was so beautiful and so tiny, I always felt clunky around her, and then my dad was always surrounded by supermodels… I was short, and you feel uncomfortable in your skin anyway at that age.”

Now 30 with a career that’s soaring, few of Kravitz’s successes have made her feel that she has earned them entirely on her own merit. “When I got into acting school, I never knew if it was because of my audition or my last name,” she says. “But I’m slowly learning that no director will hire me because of my surname. The first 10 years of my career have been about proving myself. I now finally feel like I’m in a place where I’m able to say, ‘I deserve this,’ and, “I worked really hard.’ I’m getting better.”

How to bleach your hair like a professional
How to bleach your hair like a professional

Want to channel Marilyn Monroe’s platinum-blonde locks? Follow Vogue ’s guide to bleaching your hair for perfect results every time whether you’re doing it at home or in the salon.

Learning how to bleach your hair is no mean feat
Learning how to bleach your hair is no mean feat, and it’s not for the faint-hearted. It is a lengthy, meticulous process and not an area where one size fits all. Far from it – some hair types take to colour with no hassle, absorbing multiple tones within minutes, while others will take hours upon hours in salon or out to achieve the desired finish. But once you know the basic rules on how to bleach hair responsibly to produce the best finish, that sought-after platinum white or blonde colour is right at your fingertips.

Vogue’s checklist before bleaching hair:
1. Have you had any chemical treatments in the last six months? If so, have you trimmed away the treated hair or has it grown out? Any remnants of the chemical can compromise your final colour.

2. Make sure your hair is in good condition before you start. Bleach can be very stripping on the hair, so it’s important to use plenty of conditioning masks and treatments. For two weeks in the run-up to bleaching, apply a mask every other night. Vogue recommends Kérastase Elixir Ultime Masque or Living Proof Restore Mask Treatment.

3. Never-coloured-before hair that is light brown or lighter can be treated in one session, while darker hair will take multiple sessions. “The process really depends on the hair type, but a bleach on virgin hair will need bleaching on the ends first leaving an inch or so regrowth, then allowing this to lift for up to an hour and then bleaching roots to match,” says Shannon Gallacher, bleaching expert at Nicola Clarke for John Frieda.

4. Don’t bleach freshly washed hair as a scalp stripped of natural oils can get irritated.

How to bleach your hair in a salon (what to ask your colourist)
1. Ask for a sample strip, especially if you have coloured your hair before as this may affect the final result.

2. Be prepared to visit again. “Roots need less time than ends as the heat from the head speeds up the process,” explains Gallacher. “Once the hair has an even tone, the bleach is rinsed off and toned to the desired shade, but some hair will need more than one service to achieve the colour wanted.”

3. After you have bleached your hair with an expert, follow with an in-salon Olaplex treatment to immediately inject as much hydration as possible.

Zoë Kravitz and Karl Glusman Are Reportedly Married
Zoë Kravitz and Karl Glusman Are Reportedly Married
“Oh yeah, I’m engaged,”

Did Zoë Kravitz take a page out of Justin Bieber’s wedding playbook? According to a source from Us Weekly, the Big Little Lies star secretly wed her fiancé, Karl Glusman. Harper’s Bazaar also reported that the two have indeed wed. According to sources, the clandestine nuptials will be followed by a proper wedding bash in June, which will reportedly take place in France. You might recall that in September of last year, Bieber and Hailey Baldwin pulled something similar, when they allegedly got married in a New York courthouse.

As for Kravitz and Glusman, the duo has been engaged since October 2018, which the actress elaborated on in an interview with Rolling Stone. “Oh yeah, I’m engaged,” she said. “No, I’m engaged! I haven’t told anyone yet—I mean, I haven’t told the world. I wanted to keep it private.” One would think that Glusman would have pulled out all the stops for a proposal befitting a star of Kravitz’s caliber. Nope. “He nailed it,” she said of the relatively chill affair. “And I love that it wasn’t this elaborate plan in Paris. It was at home, in sweatpants.”

Kravitz admits that Glusman had initially planned to propose in the City of Love, but their schedules got in the way. But even the familiar confines of their home couldn’t stop Glusman from feeling the weight of the moment. “I could feel his heart beating so fast—I was like, ‘Baby, are you okay?’” Kravitz said. “I was actually worried about him!”

Meet The Jeweller Behind Zoë Kravitz's Antique Engagement Ring
Meet The Jeweller Behind Zoë Kravitz's Antique Engagement Ring
the Big Little Lies star found the ring of her dreams on Instagram

When Zoë Kravitz and her boyfriend, actor Karl Glusman, got engaged last year, they did not go down the route favoured by many stars of a blinged-out, bigger-than-your-fist diamond. Instead Glusman proposed with a more understated, albeit equally precious, antique diamond engagement ring from jeweller The One I Love NYC.

Kravitz herself had fallen in love with the Georgian ring after spotting it
Kravitz herself had fallen in love with the Georgian ring after spotting it on the antique dealer’s Instagram in the months previous, and a friend quietly pointed Glusman in the right direction. “Zoë has fearless taste: the woman doesn’t shy away from taking risks," says the site’s founder, Mia Moross. "It’s only fitting that her dream ring would be one that is both completely unique, and lifetimes away from the “traditional” engagement rings we tend to see today."

“Zoë has fearless taste: the woman doesn’t shy away from taking risks,"
The couple, who reportedly tied the knot in an equally low-key ceremony last month, are typical of Moross’s clients. They prefer the romance and exceptional craftsmanship of a one-of-a-kind antique ring over a contemporary ring picked out of a catalogue. Just as with the increasing interest in bespoke engagement rings, antique rings have the advantage of being as unique as the couple’s relationship.

symbolises their own sense of style and the nature of their relationship
“Women, particularly those who don’t subscribe to what’s in, want a piece that both symbolises their own sense of style and the nature of their relationship,” says the dealer, who hand-picks a wide range of antique rings for her website that date all the way from the Renaissance through to the Art Deco period. “In a world where everything is mass-produced and done with immediacy, the appeal of one-of-a-kind jewellery has never been stronger.”

Moross adds that selling her jewellery via Instagram was crucial to setting up her business
Moross adds that selling her jewellery via Instagram was crucial to setting up her business and continues to be central to its growth today: “The ability to connect with millions of people instantly on a platform geared towards creative, visual content is an insanely powerful tool both in fashion and business."

She had no idea that Kravitz was even a fan of her Instagram until Glusman contacted her. “Even in our first exchanges I was completely unaware whom the ring was for," she says, adding that by coincidence, Kravitz contacted Moross separately shortly afterwards about other pieces, unaware of Glusman’s romantic plan.

The engagement ring itself features a band of delicately glowing large rose-cut diamonds
The engagement ring itself features a band of delicately glowing large rose-cut diamonds, which, in the 18th century manner, are set in silver-topped gold and backed with a sliver of foil in order to best catch the light of the candles that would have lit every room at the time. “This old-world technique has all but vanished in jewellery making today, it’s very much a lost art,” says Moross.

The foil creates a subtle, romantic radiance that is markedly different to the blinding dazzle
The foil creates a subtle, romantic radiance that is markedly different to the blinding dazzle that many modern diamond cuts aim for today. This effect may well be the reason that Kravitz’s ring was not spotted until months after Glusman popped the question, despite her wearing it several times on the red carpet for all the world to see. The actress is no stranger to dazzling baubles, often opting for giant emerald earrings by Lorraine Schwartz (as at last year’s Golden Globes) and Anabela Chan’s diamond and pearl girandoles at the recent Met Gala. Perhaps it is no wonder that all attention was on her carat-busting earrings and not the delicate ring on her left hand. Her engagement only became news when a Rolling Stone interviewer spotted her ring during an interview last October.

Moross believes antique rings have a unique soul that makes them perfect for the role
For Moross, the choice of which era to go for when selecting a ring is a wholly personal one. Each has its own distinct aesthetic and craftsmanship techniques. An Art Deco ring tends to be hardier in construction than a 18th or 19th century one and therefore will appeal to those who do not wish to worry about the special care required by a foil-backed gemstone for example. Whatever their preference though, all couples want a ring that will stand the test of time and be passed down from generation to generation. Moross believes antique rings have a unique soul that makes them perfect for the role: “No matter what era you fancy, antiques all share one common theme: a profound storyline, a history to tell.”
