Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, has helped launch a new charity cookbook featuring dishes shared by families whose homes were affected by last year’s fire at the Grenfell Tower in London.

The duchess wrote the foreword for the book, which celebrates meals served up from a community kitchen that emerged in the aftermath of the June 2017 tragedy. The cookbook is her first solo project since formally joining the royal family.
As the duchess worked with the women, the idea of a cookbook surfaced as a way to keep the kitchen open seven days a week and expand its reach within the community.

“I immediately felt connected to this community kitchen; it is a place for women to laugh, grieve, cry and cook together,” the duchess wrote in the book's foreword, as revealed Monday by Kensington Palace. “Melding cultural identities under a shared roof, it creates a space to feel a sense of normalcy – in its simplest form, the universal need to connect, nurture, and commune through food, through crisis or joy – something we can all relate to.”

Proceeds from “Together: Our Community Cookbook” will allow the kitchen “to thrive and keep the global spirit of community alive,” the palace said.

In addition to writing the book’s foreword, the duchess, who formerly ran a lifestyle blog that included extensive features on food and cooking, also narrated a promotional video for the project that the palace featured on social media.

“Like these women I’m passionate about food and cooking as a way of strengthening communities,” she says in the video.
The cookbook features more than 50 recipes from across Europe, the Middle East, North Africa and the Eastern Mediterranean. In the book’s introduction, the women of the Hubb Community Kitchen explained that their recipes work “because they have been made so many times — it’s proper comfort food.”

"Our kitchen has always been a place of good food, love, support and friendship. We cook the recipes we’ve grown up with,” they wrote.

"Swapping family recipes and moments of laughter gave us a sense of normality and home. We named ourselves the Hubb Community Kitchen to celebrate the thing that we all feel every time we meet — hubb means love in Arabic."

Together Cookbook

Together is a charity cookbook, celebrating the power of cooking to strengthen communities. In the aftermath of the Grenfell Tower fire, a group of local women gathered together to cook fresh food for their families and neighbours. Over the chatter and aromas of the kitchen they found that cooking and eating together can create connections, restore hope and normality, and provide a sense of home. This was the start of the Hubb Community Kitchen.

Together showcases over 50 delicious recipes from the women of the Hubb Community Kitchen, with a foreword by HRH The Duchess of Sussex.

Profits from the sales of Together will support the Hubb Community Kitchen, helping to keep it open for up to seven days a week and to widen its reach to others in the community, so it can continue changing lives and bringing people together through cooking. The Duchess is supporting the project in her role as Patron of The Royal Foundation, whichThe Royal Foundation is administering the transfer of funds from the sale of ‘Together’ to the Hubb Community Kitchen and related community projects.

Meghan Markle had a major royal first this morning, sharing her first solo project as a duchess since joining the family in May. The Duchess of Sussex is supporting a charity cookbook by some of the victims of the Grenfell Tower fire called Together: Our Community Cookbook. It's fitting for a woman who used to run a food/lifestyle blog, The Tig. The book "celebrates the power of cooking to bring people together," Kensington Palace wrote on its Instagram announcement, and "showcases over 50 recipes from women whose community was affected by the Grenfell Tower fire." The 24-storey apartment building burnt down in June of last year, killing 72 residents; the book's proceeds will support the Hubb Community Kitchen, a gathering place for survivors. (Hubb means love in Arabic.)

"I immediately felt connected to this community kitchen; it is a place for women to laugh, grieve, cry and cook together,"the Telegraph reports that Meghan wrote in the book's forward. "Melding cultural identities under a shared roof, it creates a space to feel a sense of normalcy – in its simplest form, the universal need to connect, nurture, and commune through food, through crisis or joy – something we can all relate to."

In her first solo project as a member of the royal family, the Duchess of Sussex is supporting a new charity cookbook showcasing recipes from women whose community was affected by the Grenfell Tower fire, Kensington Palace said in a statement on Monday.

IIn January 2018, as she was settling into London, Meghan Markle met the group of women who gathered to cook twice a week in a communal kitchen at the Al Manaar Muslim Cultural Heritage Centre.

"I immediately felt connected to this community kitchen; it is a place for women to laugh, grieve, cry and cook together," Markle, who has continued to make regular private visits to the kitchen, said in a statement.

She championed the cookbook project as a way of ensuring the kitchen could operate more regularly, and it is hoped that profits from the sales will help keep the kitchen open up to seven days a week.

The kitchen originally provided a place for the women to cook fresh food for their families and neighbors, who were living out of hotel rooms after the fire, but more than a year later it has also become a support network. The women who gather there call it the Hubb Community Kitchen -- in Arabic "hubb" means "love."

"I immediately felt connected to this community kitchen; it is a place for women to laugh, grieve, cry and cook together," said the Duchess, who has written the foreword for the book.

Supported by The Royal Foundation, "Together: Our Community Cookbook" features over 50 recipes from across Europe, the Middle East, North Africa and the Eastern Mediterranean, and celebrates "the power of cooking to bring communities together."

"Melding cultural identities under a shared roof, it creates a space to feel a sense of normalcy -- in its simplest form, the universal need to connect, nurture, and commune through food, through crisis or joy -- something we can all relate to," she said.

The Duchess, who is quite a foodie herself, would often share recipes from her kitchen on her now defunct lifestyle blog The Tig.

Meghan Markle has cooked up something special.

Kensington Palace announced today that the Duchess of Cambridge has written the foreword for a new cookbook, featuring recipes from the Hubb Community Kitchen in West London. The 37-year-old royal first visited the kitchen in January and has continued to make private visits.

"Together is a cookbook. But, it's also the story of a West London community who gathered together in a kitchen and discovered the healing power of sharing food. In January 2018, as I was settling into my new home of London, I met a group of women whose community had been affected by the Grenfell Fire. They had decided to get together to cook fresh food for their families and their neighbors. And so, for two days ever week, these women were able to cook and share their delicious recipes together. I immediately felt connected to this community kitchen. Like these women, I'm passionate about food and cooking as a way of strengthening communities," Markle says in a promotional video. "So, I am proud to be supporting this cookbook, Together, which features delicious recipes from the women of the Hubb Community Kitchen. The proceeds will allow the kitchen to stay open and to thrive so it can continue transforming lives and communities through cooking. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do."
