Sterling K. Brown, Two-time Emmy winner Stays Humble
The two-time Emmy winner somehow stays humble despite the enormous success of Black Panther and This Is Us.
Sterling K. Brown Doesn't See Himself as the Trailblazer He Is

Sterling K. Brown might just be the nicest guy in Hollywood. Within literal seconds of meeting him, he's already complimented my handwriting with more enthusiasm than any teacher ever offered me and said "This is great!" multiple times.

It's not difficult to see why audiences are drawn to him—his positive energy is off the charts and matched only by his humility. He's been booking acting gigs for over a decade and a half, but he finally got the recognition he deserved when he starred on The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story, for which he earned his first Emmy award. Brown now has a career most actors could only dream of having.

It's clear that this is a man who loves life, and why shouldn't he? His performance as Randall Pearson on NBC's mega-hit This Is Us is beloved by fans and critics alike, and has earned him a second Emmy, a Golden Globe, and a SAG award. Not since Lost has a television show caused so much emotional whiplash through time jumps; now with the introduction of flash-forwards, Brown has even more of an opportunity to grow Randall as a character.

When he wasn't making people sob on This Is Us, he found time to co-star in Black Panther with a pivotal role that acts as a catalyst to much of the film's plot. Black Panther, of course, has gone on to shatter records and just finished its third weekend at the top of the box office.

Oh, and he's hosting Saturday Night Live for the first time this weekend, an honor he calls "simply amazing." But true to form, he didn't let his busy schedule interfere with an opportunity to help a community in need, which is why he decided to team up with Clorox and Thrive Collective to commemorate the opening of a newly renovated arts and mentoring center for at-risk youth in Harlem.

When I sat down with him in Harlem a few hours before the space's opening, we talked about his involvement in the project, representation in Hollywood, and how he feels about being called a trailblazer.

Sterling K. Brown to Make 'SNL' Debut: Watch Him Adorably Practice His Introduction
Sterling K. Brown 'SNL' Debut

Sterling K. Brown is fulfilling his dream

The This Is Us and Black Panther star will make his debut on Saturday Night Live, hosting the iconic late-night live sketch show for the very first time on March 10, NBC announced Tuesday. For his episode, Brown will be joined by musical guest James Bay.

Mr. Mars won all six of the awards he was nominated for, including the top prizes of album, record and song of the year. The next most rewarded artist was Kendrick Lamar, the provocative and critically admired rapper from Compton, Calif., whose five wins included a sweep of the rap categories.

The 41-year-old actor couldn't contain his excitement, taking to social media to count down his big day in Studio 8H. "See you March 10th. CAN'T WAIT," Brown wrote on Instagram.

Just how enthusiastic is Brown to be leading SNL? He's already practicing his introduction!

Brown posted an Instagram video of himself practicing the legendary SNL introduction in the mirror, before the camera pans over and he adorably confesses to being caught. "You caught me!" he says excitedly, punching his fists in the air in absolute delight. "Be there or be square. Your boy is going to have the time of his life!"

He wrote a separate caption for the video, sharing that being on the NBC show "is truly a dream come true." "I’ve watched @nbcsnl since I was a baby. To finally get to host is one of the more surreal moments of my life, but it’s gonna be awesome," Brown wrote.

Black Panther's Sterling K. Brown Quietly Became America's Favorite Actor
How Black Panther's Sterling K. Brown Quietly Became America's Favorite Actor
Brown told GQ about what he's doing with his newfound Emmy-winning, franchise-joining star power.
"It was 2006 or 2007, and I was like 'Man, ain't nobody gonna do no black superhero movie, I don't know what you're talking about!'"

It's been a year since we last spoke to Sterling K. Brown following his Emmy-winning performance as Christopher Darden in American Crime Story: The People v O.J. Simpson. And what a year he's had: Not only did the actor win an Emmy, but his next TV role as Randall Pearson on the NBC hit family drama This Is Us earned him a SAG nomination. (His American Crime Story performance also earned him a second nomination that year.) In addition to awards love and a role on the only unquestionable breakout TV hit of the season, Brown has lined up an enviable slate of film roles: A supporting part in Ryan Coogler's Black Panther, a lead role in this Fall's Marshall, a period drama about Thurgood Marshall's early career, and a part in Shane Black's The Predator. To borrow an expression Brown is fond of using himself: The guy's a beast.

And you're going to be with Chadwick Boseman again in Black Panther! So Reginald Hudlin was the director of Marshall, and he wrote a series of Black Panther comics in the early 2000s that I was first introduced to the Black Panther by, and I remember talking to a friend of mine when I was on Army Wives—I had this collection of all these Black Panther comics, and he was like, "Do you read comic books?" And I said, not a ton. I like the X-Men, et cetera, but I own these Black Panther comic books. And my buddy was like, "Dude, you should get the rights to this."

It was 2006 or 2007, and I was like "Man, ain't nobody gonna do no black superhero movie, I don't know what you're talking about!" So then fast forward ten years! It was really interesting to talk to Reggie about his involvement in the comics, and then to talk to Chad, and then wind up being a part of this world. It's exciting, not just on an artistic level, but I also think it's historic, to have a film of this magnitude, with a primarily African-American cast, telling a story of this mythical African country of Wakanda. It's just something I couldn't have even fathomed when I was a kid. And now my little boys get a chance to go to the multiplex, and see it happen right in front of their eyes, and that excites me.

Can you say anything about your character? His name is N'jobu. He is a character from T'Challa's past, and I think, without losing any limbs on my body, that's all I can say.

Sterling K. Brown Makes Golden Globes History as First Black Actor to Win TV Drama Award

Sterling K. Brown just made history

The actor took home the award for best actor in a television series, drama, at the Golden Globes on Sunday night — becoming the first black actor ever to do so.

“I’ve never been the first brother to do anything,” he said of the accomplishment. “I was the fourth black student council president, was the fourth JV captain to my basketball team. Finally, to be the first of something is really interesting because I never considered my self to be a trailblazer. I just try to stay in my truth all the time. If I come from a place of truth, that’s all I can do.”

He was also the only black actor in the category, beating out Jason Bateman (Ozark), Freddie Highmore (The Good Doctor), Bob Odenkirk (Better Call Saul) and Liev Schreiber (Ray Donovan) for the coveted trophy.

Brown won for his gut-wrenching portrayal of Randall Pearson in the hit show This Is Us.

And this isn’t the first time Sterling made history for an award show win. At the 2017 Primetime Emmys, he became the first black actor in 19 years to win an award for outstanding lead actor in a drama series.

During his acceptance speech at the Golden Globes, he made a point to thank his wife, Ryan Michelle Bathe.

“Let me thank my wife. I love you so much, thank you for supporting me so much. My kids, Andrew and Amare, daddy loves you,” Brown said, before promising to “take you to school in the morning.”

Clay-Based Grooming Products
Clay-Based Grooming Products

This Magical Ingredient Should Be A Part Of Your Grooming Routine
As the seasons change and temperatures begin to peak, your skincare regimen should also shift to meet the change in climate. Naturally, with spring and summer, the way you manage your skin differs greatly from winter routines. Heat and humidity can be harmful to healthy skin when not treated properly. Most believe that summer is the gateway to oily and greasy skin. And it is. Conversely, though, warmer weather can also lead to extreme dryness.

Ultraviolet radiation from the sun can strip your skin of its natural oils, subsequently leaving them running down your face. Then, as you wipe that perspiration away, you’re in fact removing your skin’s protective layer, leaving your face vulnerable to greater risk. There’s also excess showering. The proper methodology to cure these ills involves clay-based products.

Here’s the thing: you don’t want to scrub dirt away during the summer. Removing your skin’s natural moisture in summer is an unfortunate misconception. For clean and well-nourished skin, adding this key ingredient to skin is a major key.

The Grooming Benefits of Clay
Adds minerals to hair for a silkier look

Calms inflammation and redness

Heals boils and burns

Hydrates and moisturizes hair/skin

Serves as an exfoliator

Tightens and tones skin

The Four Types of Clay
Bentonite: One of the more common types that is very absorbent with strong detoxifying and healing powers for skin ailments.

French: Better known as sea clay, this version is highly absorbent and better suited for super-oily skin.

Kaolin: The most common clay type perfect for brightening and softening sensitive skin.

Rhassoul: Great for oily skin and hair, this red-based clay is gentle on skin and makes for a great exfoliator when mixed with other ingredients like salt, oatmeal, and pumice.

As one can see, clay-based products are chock full of vitamins and minerals that strengthen your hair and skin, while also removing impurities. We’ve done the work and sampled a few products that are essential for the upcoming season. Get these products in your life to ensure proper skincare through the summer.

Much like charcoal, clay is rich in natural elements that may cause a different reaction on your skin depending on sensitivity. Hence why it’s worth knowing the differences between each type used in skincare products, so to determine what best suits your body. Do your due diligence and look over the ingredients list for it could mean the difference between flawless skin or hideous breakouts.

Best Razors For Men
What to look for in a Razor

Blade type
Seek a stainless steel blade for hygienic purposes and premium sharpness.

Razor head
Flexibility is everything for a safety razor, so fancy one that locks the blade in place firmly and can be angled across the face for precision shaving, for most cartridge razors bear the typical pivotal head to perform basic shaves.

Maintenance
A quick rinse and wiping off blades every few shaves suffices for cartridge razors, where as straight razors require more care by cleaning the razor lock system to preserve shelf life.

Length and weight
Consider a smaller grip for better balance or a razor with some heft to let the weight of the razor do the shaving for you.

Special features
Always worth noting that any cartridge razor with lubrication strips or multiple blades work best to provide smoother strokes.

Sterling K. Brown Has a 'Psychological Zeal About Running'

The first time I went on a serious run was when I was 21 years old at Stanford University. I woke up on my birthday and said, “I want to run 10 miles.” I just wanted to see if I could run double-digit mileage.

From 21 to 30 I continued the tradition and ran 10 miles every year on my birthday.

Nowadays, four miles is my sweet spot because I maximize my burn, but I don’t take myself away from my wife and two kids for such a huge time that she complains about my absence. If I get in four miles four to five times a week, I’m happy.

It feels good to look in the mirror and say, “I did something for myself today.”

Sterling K. Brown Teases This Is Us’ ‘New Addition’: ‘They’re Bringing the Heat!’

Okay, 35-year-old country crooner Craig Wayne Boyd actually won the hit NBC singing competition, but performer Bruno Mars came close to stealing his spotlight with a live performance of “Uptown Funk.” And it was Mars’s hair in particular that had everyone talking.

The 29-year-old singer hit the stage in gold perm curlers (to the delight of the Twitterverse), a nod to the retro ’70s vibe of the music video for his hit. In the clip, Mars and his posse get their hair set in a barber shop.

And if anyone can make rollers look cool, it’s definitely Mars. Or maybe that deep V-neck, metallic blazer and gold necklace situation also helps him look super-suave. Regardless, he rocks the look better than Bradley Cooper in American Hustle. (Sorry, Brad!)

Sterling K. Brown Shares How He Got His Incredible 6-Pack

Sterling K. Brown wowed his Instagram followers when he shared a photo of his insane six-pack, but the This Is Us star says he isn’t in the gym 24/7 — he got his impressive abs by working out on his own as much as his schedule allows.

“I try to get something in five days a week,” Brown, 40, tells PEOPLE exclusively of his workout schedule. “My work schedule doesn’t always accommodate my workout schedule, but I make do with what time I’ve got.”

When he does have down time, Brown rotates between a few different types of workouts.

“I love basketball because it’s social, and you’re not even thinking about working out — you’re just playing a game, and getting great exercise at the same time,” he says. “I also run, swim, bike, lift, do yoga. I just try to do something to sweat at least an hour a day.”

Brown — who is currently filming The Predator and Black Panther, and will star in Marshall later this year — tones his abs with a workout loosely based on P90X’s “Ab Ripper X” exercises.
