Shay Mitchell's 'Wisdom Hairs'
Shay Mitchell's ‘Wisdom Hairs'
Shay Mitchell's Wisdom Hairs

While Shay Mitchell may have some of the most enviable hair in Hollywood, she’s not too proud to admit that at 29-years-old, she’s also spotted a few grays here and there. And she’s not freaking out about them.

“I call them wisdom hairs — more wisdom, great!” says the actress, who’s also the face of Smashbox’s The Cover Shot: Eye Palettes tells PeopleStyle during an interview featured in this week’s issue, now on newsstands. “I’ve definitely found a gray hair, probably like five of them.”

However, Mitchell, who turns 30 this April, looks at aging in a positive light. “I am getting older,” she tells PeopleStyle. “I am happy. You know what that means? I have more experiences. You can’t freak out about [gray hairs]. Plus if you don’t like it, then dye your hair — no problem.”

Mitchell’s no-stress approach to getting older means just plucking out those pesky gray hairs, laughing it off and moving on. “Yeah, I definitely take them out,” she adds. “Put a collage [of them] next to my bed — no, I am kidding! I don’t do that, but yeah, I take them out.”

So what’s the star’s beloved product that she constantly keeps in her beauty cabinet for a good hair treatment? Coconut oil. “That’s the secret to me, it’s super crucial,” Mitchell said. “My mom was raised in the Philippines and that was her secret for beautiful hair, beautiful skin, that natural glow. So I like to use that in my hair and it really does work.”

Her favorite oil, from the organic brand Kapuluan, gives back by planting a coconut palm in the Philippines for every purchase that’s made. And it’s Mitchell’s go-to for her weekly hair care routine. “On a Sunday I would use it and rinse it through,” she says. “But if I am ever out in the sun or if I am going swimming, I will put it in my hair, too.”

Overall, she’s just trying to keep her beauty outlook positive: “My beauty philosophy is to have fun and not take it too seriously,” she says.

Shay Mitchell's Life Philosophy
Shay Mitchell's Life Philosophy Will Inspire You to Try Something New Stat

Her secret to success, health, and happiness? Work hard, play hard; eat a lot, work out a lot. Oh, and never be afraid to leave your comfort zone.

Shay Mitchell is most confident not when she's all glammed up and gorgeous on the red carpet but after an intense workout. "I'm sweaty, and I don't have an ounce of makeup on, but that is 100 percent when I feel my best," says Shay, 30, who loves boxing. "It's me in my rawest form, doing something great for my body, pushing myself as hard as I can, and it feels so good." (Don't believe it? Watch her crush an insane circuit workout with trainer Kira Stokes.)

That realness, along with a curiosity and passion that motivate her to discover new ventures, has earned Shay millions of loyal fans. Eight years ago, she went from working bottle service at a club to landing a role as one of the main characters on Pretty Little Liars, the popular TV show that launched her career. Today Shay is starring in the new Lifetime TV series You, a romantic thriller that premieres later this year; has her own production company and a multiyear deal with Warner Bros. to develop projects for TV and digital platforms; and is busy creating videos, posts, and other content for her social media empire, which includes an incredible 18.4 million followers on Instagram, 2.8 million YouTube subscribers, and 5.8 million followers on Facebook.

"I am so lucky because I get to do what I love every day—things I've always dreamed of," Shay says. By sharing her life, whether it's her Shaycation travel series on YouTube, which follows her trips to destinations around the world, or the killer workout videos she posts on Instagram, she hopes to inspire others to go after their goals. "My message is, If I can do it, you can too. If you really want something, believe in it, and have the drive and focus, you can attain it," she says.

How to Maintain Flawless Hair Extensions

Treat them the way you would your real hair.
Treat them the way you would your real hair. “Naturally textured virgin hair extensions should be treated and cared for the same way you’d treat your own natural hair. Regularly washing, moisturizing and detangling your textured hair extensions is key to extending the life of the hair,” advises Opara.

Dry your hair well.
Dry your hair well. Hair that hasn’t been dried properly can lead to scalp issues, including fungal ones. So if you have thick hair, be sure to clip your hair in sections and dry your braided sections thoroughly.

Don’t neglect your real hair.
Don’t neglect your real hair. “Hair that hasn’t been maintained under a weave may begin to suffer from breakage or matting when the extensions are removed,” warns Pitters.

Remove them in a timely fashion.
Remove them in a timely fashion. Extensions will damage your hair if left in too long. Pitters recommends redoing interlock sew-ins every 6 weeks and the braided sew-in version every 8 to 10 weeks.

Avoid oils.
Avoid oils. If you have glue-on bonded extensions, oils will break down the extension glue. And that is something that you don’t want to happen until you are ready to remove your pieces.

Take a break now and then.
Take a break now and then. Allow your natural hair and scalp to breathe from time to time. Relieve the stress placed on your hair and scalp by waiting a week or two after removal of your extensions before getting them replaced.

Shay Mitchell Talks Not Labeling Her Sexuality
'Pretty Little Liars' Star Shay Mitchell Talks Keeping Fit, Sexy Date Nights, and Not Labelling Her Sexuality
'Pretty Little Liars' Star Shay Mitchell Talks Keeping Fit, Sexy Date Nights, and Not Labeling Her Sexuality

"I fall in love with the spirit of somebody. Love is love."

What challenges did playing a bisexual character on Pretty Little Liars present?
At the beginning of shooting PLL, I would get asked all the time, "What's it like to kiss a girl? What's it like to kiss a girl?" And I was like, "Not much different than a guy." At the end of Season 7, I didn't get asked that anymore. It wasn't that exciting of a question to people anymore, which I think is so great. It was actually really refreshing.

I've heard you don't define your sexuality. Is that just hearsay?
People always ask me, "You play a gay character? Are you gay? Are you straight? Are you this? Are you that?" Look, Emily doesn't label herself, and I don't label myself either. I fall in love with the spirit of somebody. Love is love, and that's something that I'll keep saying.

What sort of roles are you looking to play next?
Strong female characters... whether it's from a great script or on show I really love.

Gotta ask: How did you get this great outlook on life?
I would have to say it was the environment I grew up in. My dad was extremely positive, and I carried that along into my adolescence and into now. I just think you can be one of two ways, and I would choose to be more positive than negative. I'm really fortunate for what I have and where I'm about to go so, yeah... why not look at the world with a positive outlook?

Shay Mitchell swears by coconut oil for shiny hair

Shay Mitchell swears by coconut oil as the secret to getting super shiny hair. The actress is building a reputation for her chic red carpet style, and is also known for her ability to pull off just about any hair or make-up look.

While Shay has access to any beauty product available on the market, she actually prefers a natural multitasker to care for her signature brunette tresses.

"Coconut oil! Straight up, straight out of the jar - I use it to moisturise my skin and my hair," she told Racked.com. "I like to do a weekly mask, too. I think it's good to just kind of go off of your natural texture."

'Pretty Little Liars' Star Shay Mitchell Reveals Her Favorite Memories on the Show, How She Takes the Perfect Selfie & What Dating is Like in Hollywood
Pretty Little Liars' Star Shay Mitchell Reveals How She Takes the Perfect Selfie & What Dating is Like in Hollywood

From your smartphone to the big and small screens, actress, activist, and social media superstar Shay Mitchell is slaying Hollywood and beyond as the girl next door—but not without speaking her truth and inspiring her (millions of) followers.

In a place like Hollywood
... where the media glare is unforgiving and imperfection can be fatal, it’s rare to encounter someone who is truly down-to-earth. Enter Shay Mitchell. The Canadian-born bombshell was catapulted into the spotlight at just 23 years old when she landed the role of the sporty and spunky Emily Fields on the hit television show Pretty Little Liars. Fast-forward seven years and Mitchell has solidified her status as an in-demand actress, launched a lifestyle channel on YouTube, co-authored a novel titled Bliss, and become one of the fiercest and most followed social media stars of her generation. Yet despite her success, she remains genuinely kind and humble, continuously reminding us that she’s "just like anyone else."

You’ve said that the hardest part about your career is the criticism.
What have you been criticized for? So many different things! I do have a big social media following, and the more you put yourself out there, the more you lend yourself to being criticized. As long as I’m good with who I am and I can go to sleep at night confident with how I spend my time, my day, and the type of person that I am, then all is fine. The criticism started when I first went into the PLL role and [the critics said], "Oh, she doesn’t look anything like the character. The character is supposed to have red hair, fair complexion, and freckles; she looks nothing like that." I thought, All right, that was the girl next door, and I’m the new version of the girl next door. The world is a melting pot now. It’s no longer the typical American girl with blonde hair and blue eyes. That didn’t stop me for one second from wanting to go in and give it a try. I still wanted to give them my best take on who I thought this character was. And had I stopped at that physical description this character was known for, then I wouldn’t be here right now. It’s all about taking chances and stepping out of your comfort zone. About not taking no for an answer and continuing to fight for what you want. If we don’t, then we can’t complain about staying stagnant.

You’re a queen on social media! How do you take a good selfie?
My biggest tip is to take 5,000 photos. I’m not even joking. My friends who have taken photos of me know that it takes an entire camera roll full of photos, and hopefully, fingers crossed, there will be one that I like. I always want to make it a point to say that when girls say, "You take such good photos!" Also realize that I, like you, take 5,000 different shots to get the one I like. We all do the same thing; I’m definitely no different. And I really think [social media] shouldn’t be taken too seriously. I like seeing other people’s outfits of the day, so if I’m wearing an outfit that I like, I take a photo against a white wall and there we go. So start filling up your camera roll, okay? And always find the light! Natural light is the best.

You’ve done a great job at keeping your private life private. How do you do it?
When I want to go out and have fun with my friends, I know there are places where paparazzi aren’t going to take your picture. I’ve been caught having a few too many drinks, and you’re asking for it when you go to places where there are paparazzi. But if you want to have fun and let loose, there is no better place than your home. I have people over quite often, and it’s my sanctuary. I can be who I want to be and let loose and not have to worry about cameras or anything. I think you just have to be careful in public and on social media as well. Don’t put up things that you think you’re going to take down in a moment. People [take] screenshots. So I’m really careful. I love wine and have drinks with dinner; I’m no angel. But I also don’t have to be in the public eye when I’m having fun like that.

Is dating in Hollywood difficult?
I think it’s hard to date in general. Everyone has the same struggles, whether you work in Hollywood or not. We all have the same insecurities when it comes to relationships. The only difference in Hollywood is that your relationship is more public. It’s about how comfortable people in Hollywood are with posting about their relationship and knowing it is going to get picked up by every single news outlet. For me, like other parts of my life, I want to live it exactly how I want to live it. If I post something on social media, then you have all the right in the world to ask me about it, because I’m putting it out there. But with [relationships], I don’t. I’m having fun, I’m very happy, and that’s it. I don’t want to have anyone look at my Instagram and see a timeline of guys I’ve dated.

Shay Mitchell Fulfilled Her Rapunzel Hair Dream

At least once a week, we're squinting at our computer screens trying to figure out if Shay Mitchell really cut her hair. While she never truly takes the plunge with a set of cutting shears, the celebrity has fashioned herself something of a beauty chameleon, constantly trying out drastically different new styles. But for New York Fashion Week, Mitchell decided to finally fulfill her Rapunzel hair fantasies, debuting an incredibly long braided high pony.

The look was created by stylist Justine Marjan, who was just signed on as a TRESemmé global stylist and regularly works with the Kardashians.

Obviously, the rope braid was created with the help of lengthy extensions. "'I whip my hair back and forth...' thank you @justinemarjan for giving me Rapunzel vibes last night!" wrote Mitchell in her Instagram caption.
