Russell Wilson Breaks Down His Daily Grooming Routine and Gives Tips on Achieving an Epic Beard

Seattle Seahawks’ Super Bowl champion Russell Wilson has broken NFL records, thrown a slew of touchdown passes, and has one of the most illustrious careers in football history. Yet, he still remains as humble as an usher on a Sunday morning church service. Speaking of which, going to church is one of his favorite things to do!

We recently caught up with Russell, to talk to him about his new partnership with Braun (the state-of-the-art grooming and shaving company best known for its electric shaver), and we were in for a pleasant surprise after learning that he’s waaayyy more than just a handsome face — he’s a well-rounded arbiter of light, who constantly gives more than what he’s asked for.

Essence:
You’re an extremely busy person, how do you approach each day?

Russell:
One of the first things I do every morning… I give myself a fresh shave, a fresh grooming- making sure that I’m ready to roll. It makes you feel excited for the day [like] ‘Today’s gonna be a great day,’ and that’s the mentality!

Essence:
Tell us a little bit about the Braun collaboration.

Russell:
The cool thing about Braun and myself is we’re all in this thing together; it’s a collaborative effort! The title of the campaign, ‘Morning By Design’ hits home because it’s important that every detail is right and grooming plays a key role every morning. Last year we talked about ‘face greatness’ and this year is a new idea; in life, you need to have the right mindset -a championship approach- a winning approach and a winning mindset.

Essence:
How would you describe the ‘Russell Wilson’ style of getting dressed? Are you a T-shirt & jeans type of guy, or dressed to the nine’s?

Russell:
It’s actually a mixture… it all depends on the mood and where I’m going. I pride myself on clothes and fashion, and I like to go from super-dressy to more casual, everyday wear.

On Sundays, I love being dressed-up in a suit-and-tie…  that’s one of my favorite things to do as well. I wear a bunch of Good Man Brand, which is a company I started (GoodManBrand.com), it’s also sold in Nordstrom and Neiman Marcus, and is doing extremely well.

On the red carpet, I’ve worn Calvin Klein Collection and also Giorgio Armani (which I wore for the wedding). I also wear Good Man Brand on the red carpet!

Essence:
Does Ciara prefer a clean-shaven Russell or a bearded Russell?

Russell:
She prefers me either way!

Essence:
How do you feel about all of your accomplishments, thus far?

Russell:
I always had big dreams. One of the things I always say is ‘Dreams come true when you capitalize on opportunity.’ I’ve been a person that’s always visualized where I wanted to be, and what I wanted in my life.

Hard work really pays off, and obviously no time to sleep. If you really want to be great at something, you have to put the work in and trust that it’s going to happen for you.

I’m grateful for how my parents were- they always encouraged rather than discourage me. They always encouraged me to be at the highest level that I could possibly be at -in everything that I did- from education to sports, to the business side of the world.

Essence:
What bits of advice can you give to our readers?

Russell:
The thing that I can suggest is, ‘surrender and surround.’ My pastor always says surrender into what you believe in, and your causes; doing everything you can to help others.

Surrounding yourself around the people that are going to make you challenge yourself and are going to make you a better person, and help change the world… and Braun’s a big part of that. That’s ultimately my mission and that’s Ciara’s mission too!

Ciara is a hair extensions chameleon
Ciara is a hair extensions chameleon
Hair extensions are still abound in Hollywood

The truth is extensions still abound in Hollywood—it’s just that they look so good that you would never know they are even there. Look at a coffee table full of glossies covered with A-listers and their impossibly shiny, voluminous, and ever-glamorous long hair. You can go ahead and stop comparing your hair to theirs right now because I’m going to tell you a secret: Just about every single one of them has extensions (or a wig, in many cases).

Celebrity hairstylist Jen Atkin
“It’s 2017. If you’re not born with the hair you want, buy it.” With those words in mind, I decided to shed my expectations and give 2018’s extensions a try.

I have struggled with volume and length since my early 20s and have tried just about every hair-growth supplement under the sun—with no success. So if this is what the celebrity, supermodel, and Instagram starlets are doing to get their luscious locks, why not give it a shot?

Enter Amanda Scott at Serge Normant at John Frieda's New York salon.
When I arrived for my consultation at the salon, which counts Sarah Jessica Parker, Julia Roberts, and Blake Lively among its clientele, one of the first things Amanda asked me as she assessed my hair, was: “How committed are you to this? What are your goals?”

extensions are indeed a commitment
Amanda explained to me that extensions are indeed a commitment. (We’re not talking about the kind you can buy in a drug store.) For anyone who is going to get extensions or already has them, it should be a red flag if your specialist does not do a consultation in which they lay out your options in terms of types of extensions and the care they will require, as well as the details of the pricing. (Be warned: They can cost thousands of dollars).

financial investment
“I think a lot of women dive into the world of extensions without fully thinking about the financial investment required and the amount of maintenance that will be needed,” says Scott. “Also, people should be careful about who they choose to work with. A thorough consultation with a stylist will help determine if that person is right for you. Hair extensions have a bad reputation as damaging, and that can be true if you work with the wrong person.”

The Seattle Seahawks quarterback and his Grammy-winning wife will focus on inspirational and aspirational stories across a variety of genres through Why Not You Productions.

On the Saturday before Super Bowl LIII, Russell Wilson was tucked away in a VIP lounge space in an industrial warehouse, sitting on a velvet sofa and opening up about the Hollywood ambitions he shares with wife Ciara.

“When people look at me, I hope they don’t just see a football player.”
"When people look at me, I hope they don’t just see a football player. I hope they see a person who is innovative and creative, someone who builds something from nothing," he told The Hollywood Reporter on a break from making the rounds inside the Wheels Up tailgate event Feb. 2. "We want to be able to impact lives. That’s what we want to do at the end of the day — even from the kids space. We just want to tell stories that connect with the world and to the emotions."

“I hope they see a person who is innovative and creative”
Wilson and Ciara have taken a big step towards that goal. The couple has announced the formation of Why Not You Productions, a company that will focus on creating film, television and digital content projects — both scripted and unscripted — that will include, but not be limited to, "inspiring and aspiring narratives and human interest stories," per the announcement.

“We are both storytellers at heart”
“While we work in different fields in our day-to-day, we are excited to come together to collaborate and create stories that we hope will touch people’s lives,” said Wilson and Ciara in a joint statement. “We are both storytellers at heart and we want to be able to share stories that uplift people and inspire others to create positive change. That’s ultimately what we want this company to represent.”

Ciara runs Beauty Marks Entertainment (BME),
In doing so, Wilson and Ciara will expand upon the work they've been doing through their joint foundation, the youth empowerment-focused Why Not You Foundation. They will continue to operate that organization along with their respective side businesses. Ciara runs her own entertainment company and record label, Beauty Marks Entertainment (BME), while Wilson heads West2East Empire (W2E), a brand management, creative content and production company. The duo will no doubt get a boost from their reps, CAA, Untitled Entertainment's Jason Weinberg and chief global brad officer Jordan Dinenberg of W2E. Wilson is additionally repped by sports agent and attorney Mark Rodgers.

Wilson heads West2East Empire (W2E)
Wilson has already been in the headlines this month. Close to two weeks ago, ESPN reported that Wilson had signed a massive four-year, $140 million extension that includes a $65 million signing bonus to make him the highest-paid player in the NFL. The deal will keep Wilson with the Seahawks through the 2023 season. As for Ciara, she continues to stay in the news and will likely do so even more when she takes the stage this week in Las Vegas at the Billboard Music Awards.

Why You Should Think Like Russell Wilson
Why You Should Think Like Russell Wilson
“At Limitless Minds, we believe our behaviors are our No. 1 competitor”

After a career of mentally prepping athletes for success on the field, Trevor Moawad has teamed up with Seattle Seahawk quarterback Russell Wilson to create Limitless Minds, a Seattle-based consulting firm that aims to retrain business leaders to act like nimble-minded, star athletes.

Few could argue against the talent of Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson. But at least one man would argue that it’s not Wilson’s talent that makes him such a formidable opponent and among the most celebrated players in the NFL. Talent only gets you so far, argues mental conditioning coach Trevor Moawad.

Moawad has been watching Wilson play for a decade or more, before he was picked up in the third-round draft for the Seahawks in May 2012.  Moawad got to know Wilson professionally when he was training for the NFL draft at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, which Moawad calls the “Hogwarts for athletes,” and Moawad helped Wilson prepare mentally for success.

“Any leader who’s going to be able to sustain success for a long period of time has to have an elite ability to lead themselves,”
“Any leader who’s going to be able to sustain success for a long period of time has to have an elite ability to lead themselves,” Moawad said. “Emotions and feelings don’t determine success, it’s your behavior that determines success.”

In other words, Wilson is engaged, and his teammates talk about his sense of professionalism for the game, his enthusiasm, his competitive nature, and his desire to win. Over the years, Moawad has helped refine Wilson’s thinking so he reacts to situations with neutral thinking and a “do simple better” approach to daily life. More on that in a minute.

"There's always a lot of highs, and there are lows, and everything else, but communication is everything," he added. "And I think when you're able to do that and take care of your kids, it's a lot of fun."

Together, the pair realized the ideals Wilson has learned to become a better player aren’t being taught in the business community, so they partnered with Division 1 athlete and biotech titan Harry Wilson and award-winning pharmaceutical sales leader DJ Eidson to create Limitless Minds.

mental conditioning Wilson used to make him the highest paid player in the NFL
The Seattle-based start-up launched in October 2018 and aims to sharpen the minds of Northwest business leaders by taking them through the mental conditioning Wilson used to make him the highest paid player in the NFL.

Employ the Neutral Mindset
Instead of thinking positively or negatively, it’s better to have a neutral mindset. When an event happens, distill the emotion out of it, and simply look at the facts, which can help you determine the best path forward.

“Neutral thinking is behavior-based thinking focused on the truth without judgment and without bias. Positive thinking, for many people, implies something bad didn’t happen, when they know it did. Negative thinking — because it’s seven times more powerful than positive thinking — automatically bleeds into your next series of events. Neutral thinking respects the good or bad for what it is, but it also recognizes that what happens next hasn’t happened yet.

“Fundamentally, if I’m winning or losing, if I’m succeeding or failing, I can always behave a certain way. … I was raised to focus on behavior. Every night I’d go to bed thinking: I take setbacks as temporary and bounce back quickly. That’s not a positive statement; that’s not a negative statement; that’s a behavior.”

Do Simple Better
In other words, understand the daily steps you need to take to be successful at your job, and adjust your life in small ways to do so.
“We believe that having a (foundational) understanding of what you need to do to succeed is going to be critical. For (Wilson), it’s playing with elite balance: His physiological balance is important. His fundamentals, going back to the basics, are really important — his arm placement, his leg movement, all those different elements. Being engaged, sitting in the front row.

He calls it KTN (Keep Taking Notes). All these things are elemental. What time he goes to bed. How often he eats. The meals he eats. The level of proteins. How he stresses. How he recovers. All of those elements are micro percentages that allow his performance to get to where it needs to be.

Success is when you do simple savagely well. Success never happens in the complicated. That’s where your talent takes over. Your talent takes over in the complicated moment. But your success is driven by doing simple better.

Use Your Fears to Your Advantage
Don’t discount your fears or anxieties. Use them to feed your desire to succeed and drive you in the direction of success.
“To pretend you don’t fear something is to not give a challenge its due respect, or to give an opponent its due respect. But you also have the ability, by facing your fears, to put a plan together to overcome it.

Everybody gets nervous. The best athletes in the world as they’re getting ready to go play in a national championship (are nervous), but a great athlete is a combination of great behaviors. Yes, they have some aptitudes, but where they differ from other people is their willingness to do the things that are going to allow them to succeed.

“At Limitless Minds, we believe our behaviors are our No. 1 competitor, and we believe that the No. 1 competitor to our behaviors is the concept of choice. We think that choice fundamentally is an illusion. If you want to be good, you don’t have a lot of choices.”

And Lastly,
“Have a real good understanding of what the right behaviors are in your job. Be able to measure yourself on a scale of one to five — one being a weakness and five being a strength.

If there are five behaviors that are important, you’d like to think that on a scale of one to five, you were somewhere above 16 or 17 out of 25 in those behaviors.

A great athlete who’s been great for a long time can tell you exactly what it takes to make them great. They don’t always do it. But they know what it looks like.”

Ciara & Russell Wilson Share the Secret to Their Happy Marriage After Celebrating 3rd Anniversary
"I think the most important thing is, first of all, just loving one another"

It's been three years since Ciara and Russell Wilson tied the knot at a stunning wedding in an English castle, and the happy pair are going strong.

Walking the red carpet arm-in-arm at this year's ESPY awards, the singer and the NFL star stopped to talk with ET's Lauren Zima, where they opened up on their recent trip to Fiji, where they spent their third anniversary.

"It was a really good time, it was very relaxing," Ciara shared. "We didn't have a long time, but it was very sweet. And I think, more than anything, [the best part was] just recognizing, 'Wow, we're three years into this thing.'"

As for how the cute couple have been maintaining their romance and their bond, the pair shared the secret they've learned to a happy marriage.

"I think the most important thing is, first of all, just loving one another, you know? For love, you'll do anything and you take care of one another," Wilson reflected. "And also communication."

"There's always a lot of highs, and there are lows, and everything else, but communication is everything," he added. "And I think when you're able to do that and take care of your kids, it's a lot of fun."

The pair recently posted some adorable messages on social media to commemorate the occasion, including a sweet video of Wilson marveling at his wife's capacity for love before hinting that the pair might be thinking about having more kids.

  Love and Marriage

Folks want to know what kind of powerful prayer GRAMMY® Award-winning mononymous singer, Ciara, prayed to God that manifested her sold-out-to-Jesus, successful NFL quarterback husband—Russell Wilson—in her life.

I prayed for a God-fearing man
“I’ll tell you a few things that I did pray: I prayed for a God-fearing man; I prayed for discernment; I prayed for wisdom,” said the 33-year-old during a sit-down interview with The Angie Martinez Show.

Before true love found the young boss, who is CEO of her newly launched company, Beauty Marks Entertainment, she was sick and tired of being hurt and mistreated in the love department—which eventually left her alone, broken, and discouraged.

“One of the most challenging times in my life [that] was new for me was obviously being a single mom. That was something that I didn’t expect to happen in my life at that time. I kind of grew up with both mom and dad,” the now happy wife and mother of two explained. “That’s what I knew. That was the vision that I saw—the mom and dad that makes [the] baby, and is together with baby, and that’s what it’s supposed to be.”

But that was not to be for her—at least not back then.

Ciara’s former fiancé, Nayvadius Wilburn, known as Future, with whom she shares a son, Future Zahir Wilburn, broke off their engagement in 2014, amid rumors that the rapper cheated on the songstress—something he denied. Whatever happened, one thing is certain: the public split devastated Ciara.

“I know that all of that made me better,” said Ciara.
“I know that all of that made me better,” said Ciara. “I became stronger through that experience, and that experience, it felt like it was a scar at the time. It felt like it was ugly, and it wasn’t the prettiest thing when I was going through it. But when I was able to stop and reflect and be in a better place, I realized— I smiled actually— when I reflected back on life’s challenges, and I was like, that was a beauty mark.”

"when I reflected back on life’s challenges, I was like, that was a beauty mark”
After that troubling season ended, Ciara said she learned her lesson, worked on loving herself more, and earnestly prayed to God for what she truly wanted in a man.

“I prayed for a man that loved kids
“I prayed for a man that loved kids, because obviously for me having my son—that was, if you’re going to love me, you’ve got to love him. I prayed for a man that was worldly as well, because I love to explore, so someone that’s going to edify my world is important to me. I was ready to level up,” she said.

It seems that the Lord answered her.

With a big smile, before a live studio audience, Ciara proclaimed, “God is good!”

Ciara Says Husband Russell Wilson Deciding to Stay with the Seattle Seahawks Was a 'Process'
"It really went down to the wire, and you just don't know what's gonna happen until that very last second"

For Russell Wilson, opting to stay on as quarterback of the Seattle Seahawks wasn’t a cut-and-dry decision — even given the substantial paycheck.

Russell Wilson, the highest-paid player in the NFL
The football star’s wife, musician Ciara, stopped by Watch What Happens Live on Tuesday night to open up to Andy Cohen about her husband’s freshly signed $140 million contract, revealing that a lot of thought actually went into the deal that has now made him the highest-paid player in the NFL.

“You know, it was a process,”
“You know, it was a process,” said Ciara, 33. “It really went down to the wire, and you just don’t know what’s gonna happen until that very last second.”

The “Goodies” hitmaker also indirectly addressed buzz that Wilson, 30, was thinking about transferring to the New York Giants, saying, “There were a lot of rumors, but we love being Seahawks. Seattle’s amazing. It’s family. It’s ‘Go Hawks’ for life. This is a special time for us, and we’re glad to know that Seattle is continuing to be home.”

Ciara Says She’s a “Better Woman” Because of Husband Russell Wilson: “That’s What Marriage Is About”

Wilson accepted a four-year, $140 million extension deal
Wilson accepted a four-year, $140 million extension deal to remain with the Seahawks, his agent Mark Rodgers revealed to the Associated Press on Tuesday.

“Russell’s goal and his hope was that he would continue his career with the Seahawks and continue to bring championships to this town,” Mark told the AP. “He believes there is still unfinished business and he is looking forward to pursuing that without having to worry about contracts and his future.”

It also comes with a $65 million signing bonus
His previous $87.6 million, four-year deal — which he signed in 2015 — was set to expire after next season. With the new agreement, Wilson will remain with the Seahawks through the 2023 season. It also comes with a $65 million signing bonus, a $107 million in guaranteed money and a very important no-trade clause, according to the AP.

“Soooo proud of my love @DangeRussWilson,” Ciara wrote

Ciara has landed her first Vogue cover with Vogue Arabia’s February 2019 issue. On the breathtaking Arabic and English front pages, the entertainer wears a bohemian Saint Laurent dress and an Alexandre Vauthier hat, being joined on set by magnificent stallions belonging to UAE royal HH Sheikha Fatima Rashed Al Maktoum. The postcard-worthy photo shoot is accompanied by a candid interview, in which the “Level Up” singer opens up about fame, family, and facing her fears. The Grammy-winner also declares that her hotly anticipated seventh album, to be released this year, is one of her “best works ever.”

“I’m super excited and my vision for this project is to inject love into the world with dance,” she explains. This is not like any other album, as most of the work in studio was done while Ciara was eight months pregnant with her second child, daughter Sienna, the result of her marriage to NFL quarterback Russell Wilson. “There was something really special about that. Being a mother of two made me feel even more confident, inspired, and fearless,” she shares, when asked if motherhood reshaped her as an artist.

Vogue Arabia editor-in-chief Manuel Arnaut says, “Getting to know Ciara, who I’ve been listening to since I was a teenager, was a refreshing surprise. Unlike many stars of her caliber, she is an absolute pleasure to work with, proving that even with millions of fans and album sales, you can keep your feet on the ground.”

Ciara follows other groundbreaking women to appear on the cover of Vogue Arabia, including HRH Princess Hayfa bint Abdullah, Nancy Ajram, Gigi Hadid, Rihanna, Halima Aden, Bella Hadid, Naomi Campbell, Afef Jnifen, and Hailey Bieber.

The February 2019 issue also shines a spotlight on emerging Arab designers focusing on streetwear and ready-to-wear, changing the fashion landscape in the Middle East. This feature marks the launch of the #buyarabdesigners campaign, which will have new developments soon.

Ciara Won Best Hair of the Night at the Met Gala
The superstar singer and dancer wore a custom Peter Dundas emerald green gown

Ciara took home the award for biggest and best hair look of the night at the 2019 Met Gala. Okay, so no actual awards were handed out, but it's what she deserves for her killer ultra-voluminous afro that shut down the red carpet.

The superstar singer and dancer wore a custom Peter Dundas emerald green gown complete with cut-outs and lined with hundreds of ostrich feathers. She accentuated her hair with two jeweled clips secured just above her ears.

The internet went wild for Ciara's major Met Gala hair moment, with celebrities like Khloe Kardashian even chiming in about her look:

It wasn't the only bold and beautiful hair look Ciara wore on Monday. Earlier in the day she showed off a similar hair texture on Instagram, but instead pulled tight into two buns on either side of her head. She let down all that gorgeous texture later in the night when she officially hit the red carpet in her final look.

On April 27, the singer shared a video of her natural hair length on Instagram, promising she would share the "secrets later" for how she made it grow. "The first time I got a relaxer when I was young, it took out my hair. I was devastated," she captioned the video. "I never thought my hair would grow back. So proud."

Ciara and Her Versace-Clad Son Are the Best-Dressed Duo at the Billboard Music Awards
  Billboard Music Awards Red Carpet

The sweetest moment on the red carpet at tonight’s Billboard Music Awards came when Ciara turned up with a very cute and very well-dressed date. The “Level Up” singer brought her 4-year-old son, Future, with her to the show, and while she looked glamorous in a black gown with an embellished deep V-neck and a sculptural shoulder from Stéphane Rolland, her little man nearly stole the spotlight.

Dressed in a gold-and-black printed Versace tracksuit, white sneakers, and a pair of sharp sunglasses, Future Jr. had major kiddie swag as he posed for the cameras and put up a peace sign while holding his mom’s hand.

Ciara, who is performing a brand-new song (titled “Thinkin Bout You”) at the show tonight, looked on proudly while her stylish offspring showed off his designer fit.

This wasn’t the first time little Future has walked a red carpet, and it certainly showed. Growing up with two musicians for parents, he has already come to be a natural in front of the cameras when it comes to pulling off a bold fashion look.

In fact, he seems to take after his always-chic mom in that department, and tonight they were officially the coolest duo at this year’s Billboard Music Awards.

Ciara has been going non-stop for some time now. “It’s all a blur,” the ‘Beauty Marks’ singer said at the BET Awards this past Sunday (June 23). “Like, honestly, I’ve been telling my team, I’m like, ‘Look, I’m just going one day at a time.’ So I don’t even know where I’m going to be tomorrow, but I’m here today,” she added. Ciara told the press that she was planning to head back to Seattle for a charity event hosted by her and Russell Wilson’s non-profit, “Why Not You?”

“I know tonight I’m going back to Seattle,” the singer said. “I’ll be in Seattle tomorrow,” CiCi added. “We have our Wilson’s Celebrity Invitational that my husband and I have for our ‘Why Not You?’ Foundation. We’ll be doing that good stuff tomorrow and I’ll be performing.”

There is much to love and respect about Ciara
There is much to love and respect about Ciara who prides herself on hard work and diligence. “It’s a blessing,” the ‘Level Up’ singer said of her life. “It’s what I call organized chaos. I was telling one of my friends, ‘I want to kind of journal some of the moments that have been happening in my life.’ Sometimes you have to pause and really realize what’s happening. And I can’t lie. I’m having the time of my life these days.”

I’m having the time of my life these days.”
Do Ciara’s kids, Future Zahir and Sienna, know all of what their mom’s job entails? “I think that my son is starting to figure it out,” the singer revealed during Sunday’s BET Awards red carpet interview. “My daughter is aware to some extent, but she’s just two [years old]. They see when we’re out and about and people call our names … They’re recognizing that something is happening.”

Grammy Winner Ciara's Secret To Balancing Ambition & Motherhood
She’s a songwriter, producer, model, actress, dancer, philanthropist and Grammy Award winning singer

the job she cherishes most is that of mom to Future, and Sienna
Is there anything Ciara can’t do? She’s a songwriter, producer, model, actress, dancer, philanthropist and Grammy Award winning singer who’s sold over 23 million albums worldwide. But the job she cherishes most is that of mom to son Future, four, and daughter Sienna, one. Not that she finds it easy to balance her fierce professional ambition with her equally fierce determination to be the best mom and wife — to Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson — she can be.

Fresh off a pre-Mother’s Day visit to the Children's Bureau, an LA nonprofit dedicated to preventing child abuse & neglect, where she sang nursery rhymes, handed out books to the kids, and gifted moms with jewelry from Pandora’s Mother’s Day Collection, Ciara shares how she manages to achieve her most balanced — and satisfying — life.
There are many challenges of motherhood! But balance is probably the greatest challenge
There are many challenges of motherhood! But balance is probably the greatest challenge because I’m very ambitious and determined to achieve my goals, and that takes a lot of work in itself. And then the job of being a mom is a whole different animal, too. I love being there with my kids, I don't want to miss out on anything, and so I'm constantly thinking, how do I balance it all out? Because both things require full attention and effort.

Kids change your life in the best way possible
There's never really the perfect time to have kids, but I will say that things have a way of working themselves out, and you'll figure it all out. Kids change your life in the best way possible. They give you perspective about what truly matters, and they make life so much better and more fun. I feel more empowered now than ever, so yeah, don't be afraid of living. Because you really are living life when you decide to create life. That's your legacy

Coghlan: What do you hope for your daughter?

If you believe in your dream, you can make it happen
Ciara: I hope that she can see through me that you can do anything you put your mind to, and you're not limited by your gender, and nothing will get in your way if you don't let it . If you believe in your dream, you can make it happen. I remember signing a recording contract when I was six months pregnant with her, and there was something really inspiring and empowering about that.

  Ciara: More Powerful Than Ever
"Once you're able to really be truly truthful with yourself, it's life changing."

Ciara won't say when she's due, only that she has two babies on the way. "I got this baby and my album," she laughs, rubbing her hands over her belly, which is extra round under horizontal stripes. At what looks like seven months pregnant, Ciara Princess Wilson, an R&B celebrity the waiters here treat like royalty, is wearing a tight tonal-striped jersey minidress, slip-on sneakers, a Chanel tote, and zero makeup. We are at the Hotel Bel-Air in Upper West Los Angeles. On the way, my Lyft driver asked if I was going to meet the Fresh Prince. I replied, "Better—a Princess."

"I got this baby and my album," she laughs,
Lately, too much of Ciara's press has been bound to her acrimonious breakup with Future, a troublingly hot-cause-he-knows-it rapper born Nayvadius DeMun Wilburn. They also have a baby together—also named Future. But Ciara has no interest in talking about her past relationship, because she isn't one to dwell. And why should she? She cut things off romantically with Future in 2014 and moved on; within two years she was married and pregnant with a new man. Her husband, Russell Wilson, is a quarterback for the Seattle Seahawks, and, at 28, is three years younger than his wife.

When talking about Wilson, Ciara's elocution is dotted with ellipses and hyperbole.
When talking about Wilson, Ciara's elocution is dotted with ellipses and hyperbole. Their relationship is, "even greater… just… so… amazing… awesome… It really is." One of the greatest things about Russell, Ciara shares, is how he supports her: "When you know they're going to be your champion, always in the corner..." I joke that her quarterback is a cheerleader, and she agrees. It's too rare to have straight men back us up, I say.

"If someone's not supporting you and your vision and your dreams," then you've got to make sure to keep it moving
"If someone's not supporting you and your vision and your dreams," Ciara agrees, "—whether it's your relationship partner, your friend, whomever, then you've got to make sure to keep it moving. If people aren't lifting you up, even if you're the strongest person in the world, eventually it does chip away at you. You don't even realize that you're losing yourself. And that's the scariest place to be in life… I don't want to lose myself. I love myself too much. I love life too much."

Ciara calls herself tough, but admits her definition of tough has changed
Ciara calls herself tough, but admits her definition of tough has changed: "Before, tough was kind of like, if something happened that was wrong, I'd just keep moving." It's something she learned early on, as an army brat. "It was a bit of a challenge," she says, "you would build friendships, then you'd have to say goodbye." "I do think part of that made me kind of tough," she admits. "Emotionally tough. The truth of it is, it helped me with being able to accept cutting things off… Which I think is a good thing, maybe it could be a bad thing, because it can make you cold in that way."

Today, she's come to realize that being vulnerable is a form of strength.
Today, she's come to realize that being vulnerable is a form of strength. "Once you're able to really be truly truthful with yourself, it's life changing," she says. "You have way more compassion than you imagine, you're sensitive to the right things." Ciara learned the strength in vulnerability, she tells me, through the birth of her first son. Baby Future taught her patience, "above all."

Baby Future is all over Ciara's phone. She shows me a video of him singing in a car seat dressed in streetwear the boys of Fairfax Avenue would save up and wait in line for. At 2, Future Jr. is already memorizing the stories his mom reads to him and dancing and singing on key. (At bath time, it's Outkast's "So fresh and so clean clean.")

He also, "loves sports and has a great arm, he can throw really well
He also, "loves sports and has a great arm, he can throw really well—it's bananas," says his mom. And he's looking forward to being a big brother. "He'll randomly pull my shirt up and be like, 'I want to see the baby,'" Ciara says. "'Hello, baby. How you doing, baby? I love you, baby. Okay, talk to you later, baby. Bye, bye.' Then he'll kiss me on my belly and put my shirt back down."
