Meghan Markle's Makeup Artist Daniel Martin Teaches Four Women How To Embrace Their Freckles

This week's episode of No Filter is all about freckles! How to embrace them, make them shine through foundation, compliment them with shadows and lip crayons, and even how to create fake ones.

We tapped celebrity makeup artist, freckle master and Honest Beauty color consultant Daniel Martin, (you know, the man behind Meghan Markle's wedding look), to teach four women the best beauty tips and tricks for their sun kisses.

As the veil was lifted from the face of a beaming Meghan Markle on her wedding day in May, the first thing that everyone noticed was that unabashed, happy smile. The second? Those freckles. Markle’s make-up artist Daniel Martin did a stellar job of perfecting and enhancing her skin, whilst still letting that smattering of freckles shine through. (Put it this way, Google searches for “Meghan Markle freckles” have risen by 100 per cent in the past month).

And it’s not only our new Duchess of Sussex making the most of her freckles. Kylie Jenner shared a picture of herself on Instagram sporting an uncharacteristically low-key make-up look, showing off a sprinkling of freckles from her forehead right down to her chin. So far it has over 7 million likes.

“Revealing and emphasising freckles is another example of women’s desire for skin which is more real, healthy, fresh and a bit outdoorsy - probably as a reaction to the faked perfection of social media beauty,” Terry Barber, MAC’s director of make-up artistry, told us. “There is a definite movement back to the idea of effortless, well-conditioned skin, even if you’re wearing make-up. It’s adding that bit of sunniness back.”

Certainly, magazine covers showcasing famously made-up faces in a more raw and natural-looking state have been the ones to set newsstands alight in recent months - take Ariana Grande’s look on Vogue’s July 2018 cover, with just a handful of freckles speckling the bridge of her nose, or Christina Aguilera’s headline-grabbing make-under for Paper magazine earlier this year and Adwoa Aboah on Edward Enninful's debut British Vogue cover. There’s a youthfulness and a summeriness to freckles that only adds to natural beauty. After all, that’s why all of the best Snapchat filters bestow a smattering of freckles across the user’s cheeks and nose.

“Revealing freckles is all about easing up on the all-over foundation coverage,” Barber says. “Opt for a sheer tint and just conceal in the areas you need or alternatively put your foundation on and then remove it from the bridge of the nose and centre of your cheeks where you want that smattering of freckles to come through.”

And if you don’t have freckles, but wish you did? Well, fake it. Topshop used to sell a freckle pencil but has since discontinued it (although perhaps now might be a good time for a relaunch?) and failing that, a brow pencil or two does the job just fine. Use a few in different shades for a more realistic effect. “Concentrate them mainly on and around the nose with a lighter sprinkle out onto the cheeks and forehead,” adds Barber. “Use varying pressure on the pencil so that you get different sizes and a more random dispersion. If they look too regular it all gets a bit panto.”

When you think of "royal hair," Kate Middleton's bouncy curls or twisted chignons probably come to mind. Both styles are always perfectly executed with nary a hair out of place—even in high humidity. That's why the world became fascinated with Meghan Markle's now-signature loose, low bun that she often wears on official palace appearances with Prince Harry.

It's non-fussy, a style that a commoner could actually do themselves without the help of a palace-approved glam squad. However, there's a fine line between "effortless" and "bedhead," so we turned to celebrity hairstylist David Lopez for his tips on how to recreate the style so that it looks intentionally unpolished and not like the knot you twist your hair into before you do the dishes.

Along with some hair pins and an elastic, it turns out that the key to Markle's updo is the face-framing layers left out of the bun. Once you have those, spritz some hairspray all over your hair before tying it into a low ponytail (this will keep the bun from slipping) and then run some hair taffy throughout the tail. We recommend TRESemmé's Compressed Texture Hairspray Hold Level 1 ($5; Target.com) because it adds grit and texture to hair without any crunchiness or stickiness, or Kenra Professional Platinum Texturizing Taffy 13 ($22; Ulta.com).

Once your hair is prepped and in a ponytail, twist it into a bun, pin it, and gently pull at it to get Markle's signature loose finish. Sounds unbelievably easy, right?
