Lupita Nyong'o's Hair and Makeup for Allure's March Cover
Lupita Nyong'o's Hair and Makeup for Allure's March Cover
Lupita Nyong'o and her Stylist Vernon François

It takes a real talent to know when to step back, and makeup artist Nick Barose had no intention of creating dramatic makeup that would compete with Nyong’o’s hair for her cover of Allure's "culture of hair" issue.

Bringing a dose of glamour to the night, the singer made sure she wowed the crowd with a series of eye-catching outfits changes — think about head-turning bodysuits, super high-slit dress, and of course, intimidating leopard prints’ catsuit

“I focused on fresh, glowing skin,” said Barose, who topped Lancôme’s Teint Idole Ultra Wear Foundation in 550 C with its Blush Subtil in Shimmer Petite Pomegranate. He kept the eyes understated (with Lancôme Ombre Hypnôse Stylo Shadow Stick in Bronze and Lancôme Drama Liqui-Pencil eyeliner in Noir Intense) and the lips dewy (with Lancôme L’Absolu Rouge lipstick in Luxe). It's pretty safe to say that Nyong'o's skin looks brilliantly radiant.

Aside from her glowing skin, it's on to the main event: her hair . Call it the cover conundrum (or, more appropriately, the Lupita Nyong’o Looks Good in Everything Law of Nature), but often the most difficult part of a shoot occurs long after wrap. For our March cover, we had Nyong’o in braids with dazzling jewels and Nyong’o heaped with voluminous curls. Two works of hair perfection, but only one cover. What’s an editor to do?

“It’s always a collaborative, creative process when Lupita and I work together. We bounce ideas around and get excited about the possibilities — and about resetting expectations for hair.” Vernon François

The hair moment that won the Allure cover was the braids
In the end, the hair moment that won the cover was the braids: “We wanted to make them traditional, forward-thinking, and honest, which is exactly what we did,” said François. “Lupita and I have wanted to create a braid look like this for some time, and having the chance to do it for Allure was a dream come true.” He used his own Vernon François Scalp Nourish-Ment Braids and Locs Spray and Vernon François Leave-in Conditioner, braiding and cornrow techniques, and beads from jewelry and hair-accessory stores. “Don’t be afraid to repurpose things; choose different metallic colors and finishes,” said François. “It’s always a collaborative, creative process when Lupita and I work together. We bounce ideas around and get excited about the possibilities — and about resetting expectations for hair.”

“Lupita and I wanted to show that coil-y or kinky hair has many strengths and can be worn in lots of different ways, celebrating its beauty and versatility,” said François.

When speaking with Allure's editor-in-chief, Michelle Lee, for the cover story, Nyong'o shared the love back to François and his products at length. "Fortunately for me, Vernon has his own line, so that’s very, very helpful," said Nyong'o. "I cannot live without his Pure-Fro Moisture Spray — [it] adds moisture to my hair, which loosens the curl — or his Scalp Nourish-Ment Braids and Locs Spray. Also, he has this Mist-Nourishing Water." She also gave us all a lesson on taking care of curly hair. "One thing I’ve learned was the acronym LOC, and that’s basically the rule for how to treat my hair: liquid, oil, and then cream. It’s the idea that you wet your hair first, then you add oil so that it can trap the moisture in, then you put a moisturizer or a cream over it." What unexpected product does Nyong'o always use for her hair? "Shea butter, natural shea butter — no perfumes, no bleaches — which doesn’t smell great at all, but it does wonders to my hair." Well, it clearly is doing wonders.

Lupita, did you ever feel pressure to change your hair

Lupita Nyong'o Best Supporting Actress, 12 Years a Slave

ALLURE: Once you started working, did you ever feel pressure to change your hair, either for an audition or for a role?

LN: Well, you know, the beginning of my career was so different than most. I didn’t really do a whole lot of the auditioning thing. I booked 12 Years a Slave before I graduated. So I already had that under my belt by the time I got to New York. Also, for auditions, I really do think about the character. There are going to be characters that have relaxed hair or whatever different hairstyles.

Conversations about hair language
Lupita Nyong'o Opens Up  Allure's March Issue: Kinky, Curly, Natural, Black Hair, and African-American hair.
“Kinky,” “Curly,” “Natural,” “Black Hair,” and “African-American hair.”

ALLURE: We’ve had a lot of conversations here about language, for example people using the terms “kinky,” “curly,” “natural,” “black hair,” and “African-American hair.”

LN: Well, I’m not an authority on this. But the term “African-American hair” is inaccurate because I’m not African-American. And I think the term “African-American” is often used as a racial term when it’s a cultural group that does not encompass every single person of African descent. So there’s that. So when you say “African-American,” you’re not actually addressing what you think you’re addressing. That’s a national identification, and it cannot be about the hair. I like the term “kinky.” Some people don’t like that term, but when I think about my hair, I think of it as African kinky hair. But I’m not really in deep with the politics of it all and the language choice. I speak just from my own experience or my own preference. Curly hair differs so much.

“A homage to African tribes”
Hairstylist Vernon François Has Made Natural Hair His Mission
Lupita Nyong’o

In 2016, François created one of the most-talked-about Met Gala hairstyles that year. “A homage to African tribes” is what the innovator called the sky-high up-do, worn by Oscar award-winning actor Lupita Nyong’o that night.

“My hair is the longest it’s been in over a decade.” Lupita
Lupita Nyong'o with Vernon Francois & Nick Barose - The Beauty Issue: From The Magazine
My hair is the longest it’s been in over a decade

ALLURE: And you’re growing it now?

LN: My hair is the longest it’s been in over a decade. A lot of that is because I have an amazing hairstylist in Vernon François. He’s been so helpful, helping me learn how to maintain my natural hair texture. Also giving me regimens that are streamlined because part of the challenge is all the steps.

ALLURE: What are your go-to products?

LN: Fortunately for me, Vernon has his own line, so that’s very, very helpful. I cannot live without his Pure-Fro Moisture Spray ($26) — [it] adds moisture to my hair, which loosens the curl — or his Scalp Nourishment Braids and Locs Spray ($24). Also he has this Mist-Nourishing Water ($18). One thing I’ve learned was the acronym LOC, and that’s basically the rule for how to treat my hair: liquid, oil, and then cream. It’s the idea that you wet your hair first, then you add oil so that it can trap the moisture in, then you put a moisturizer or a cream over it. Black Panther Is a Beautiful Showcase for Natural Hair
The Hair Critics Have Already Ruled That Everyone Looks Fantastic in The Black Panther
the hair critics have already ruled that everyone looks fantastic

Ahead of the movie’s premiere, the Cut talked to the head of Black Panther’s hair department, Camille Friend. The movie’s hair wizard explained the month-long process of creating Angela Bassett’s wig, why Michael B. Jordan needed to wear extensions, and what it was like working on a film that celebrated natural black hair.

What was the overall creative direction for the hair in Black Panther?
There were three parts. For the “traditional” look, we used inspiration from the Zulu tribe, the Maasai tribe, and the Hima tribe. Then we looked at the modern styles in the natural-hair movement. Finally we looked at the Afropunk movement, which has a lot of natural and creative styling. Also, there are five tribes in the story, and we had to create different looks for each tribe.

Working on a movie where everyone was styled in natural hair?
There’s no press and comb in this movie. No relaxers, no nothing! That was one of the things that I really was firm about. I requested that people come with their natural hair. People were like, “Are you sure?” and I was like, “Yes, I am sure! We have a qualified staff of hair people who are phenomenal and who are well-versed in natural hair.”

How did you style Michael B. Jordan’s hair?
He has dreadlocks. We wanted to give him a look that you’ve never seen before, and since he is the villain in this story, we wanted him to look strong and bold. He grew out his hair because we didn’t know what we wanted to do with his hair, at first. We eventually decided that we wanted to dreadlock it and keep the sides faded and really short. It’s a great look and he’s really sexy. We added extensions to it, but he did start out with a good amount of hair, and that’s why it looks so natural.

What’s the story behind Angela Bassett’s wig?
That was the pièce de résistance wig. It was a wig we created. All of the dreads were handmade, and they were blended with four different colors. Once those were made — there were about 110 pieces of individual dreads — we sent those to the wigmaker [Natascha Ladek], and the wigmaker inserted them in the wig. That whole process took about a month.

Lupita’s hair?
She has two looks in the movie. What we coined as the “Wakanda knot” is basically where we took small individual sections of hair and mixed those sections with Paul Mitchell’s Foaming Pomade, and then we twisted her hair down into itself to create that twist knot. The hair stayed really well all day long.

How did it feel being a part of this movie?
I don’t think black hair has ever been seen in a movie like this. It was an honor to do it and to have an open form to design and take hairstyling to the next level. That’s what we accomplished; we had a great crew and we worked really hard.

What do you want people to take away after seeing this movie?
That black hair is versatile and it’s beautiful. With the right products, anything can be re-created.

Lupita Nyong'o and Ryan Coogler, The Black Panther
How ‘Black Panther’ Makes History
How ‘Black Panther’ Makes History

ALLURE: OK, let’s talk a little bit about Black Panther. When you were working on the movie, did you sense that everybody knew this would be a history-making movie?

LN: Yes. When [director] Ryan [Coogler] approached me to be in it, he walked me through what he was thinking the story would be about. I remember him finishing his spiel and me being like, “And this is a Marvel movie?” And him being like, “Yeah.” And I was like, “And they said you could make this? Have they green-lighted this idea of yours?” And he was like, “Yeah, I can’t believe it.” And I was like, “Whoa, that is next level.” On set, it was just such an inspirational experience because so much thought was put into this film, and every single aspect of it was rich and beautiful and just arresting, actually. To see this aspirational African world that actually becomes an example for the whole wide world was spellbinding. We were all very much aware that we were in something extremely special.

lupita, What does your perfect day look like?
Lupita, What does your perfect day look like?
It’s walking along the beach

ALLURE: OK, so if not in politics, how do you want to live out your days? What does your perfect day look like?

LN: My perfect day is waking up before anyone else and having time by myself to write, read, and get a head start on the day. It’s walking along the beach, seeing the sunrise, and then having a lovely home-cooked breakfast. It’s being with my siblings — actually, my extended family — for a big, fat lunch. And then spending time with my friends, talking. Actually, painting nails.
