MFH: When you are racing, you’ve got a helmet on, how do you cope with helmet hair? What do you do with your hair?

LH: Yeah, I’ve tried lots with my hair. Obviously I used to have it as a number one all over, super easy, but then I started to grow it out. I had an afro and then I got rid of the sides.

MFH: And you went blonde?

LH: Yeah, I went blonde which killed my hair. It was a disaster. I think it was neat to do it for a bit

But when you’re driving, the helmet squashes your hair, so you don’t really have a hairstyle. When you get out, you’re sweating and your hair is a mess.

MFH: When you’re racing, do you have any pre-race rituals or grooming routines? Do you have to drink a certain amount of water or use particular products?

LH: During the week, I drink a lot of water. During the race, we lose 2-4 kilos of liquids. Yesterday I lost 2 kilos in 2 hours. You’re also eating very light – salads and stuff like that.

Lewis Hamilton storms to stunning Abu Dhabi pole position
Here's how Lewis Hamilton did it
Here's how Lewis Hamilton did it

Under blue skies and sunshine, Lewis set the pace in the final practice session of the 2018 Formula One season with a 1:37.176 on the HyperSoft tyre, while Valtteri was P5 with a 1:37.933.

Lewis completed 17 laps during the 60-minute session, while Valtteri completed 15 laps of the Yas Marina Circuit.

In Qualifying, both Lewis and Valtteri progressed through to the top 10 shootout, setting their best Q2 times on the UltraSoft tyre - which they will start the race on.

Lewis led the way after the initial runs in Q3, under the dark skies of night, with Valtteri holding P3.

However, both drivers found time on their last runs and a spectacular 1:34.794 secured Lewis his 83rd F1 pole position and 11th of the season.

Valtteri put in a 1:34.956 to jump up to second place and secure the team a seventh front row lockout of the year.

"So, to take the front row with Lewis and Valtteri is really special; this is a good Saturday for us. Both Lewis and Valtteri produced great laps at the end of Q3 to put some clean air between us and the Ferraris; and we have the positive of starting on the UltraSoft tyre for the first stint tomorrow as well.

"The HyperSoft is a bit trickier, even though the track is quite cool in the evening sessions it is still difficult to get the tyre to last the lap without overheating in the final sector. Both drivers did good laps in the final session and it was great to see Valtteri get back onto the front row on his final run and Lewis take another brilliant pole position.

QUIZ: How well do you know five-time world champion Lewis Hamilton?
QUIZ: How well do you know five-time world champion Lewis Hamilton?
Reckon you're a Lewis superfan? Only one way to find out...

Twelve seasons in Formula 1 have now netted Lewis Hamilton five world championships, following the Mercedes driver being crowned at the Mexican Grand Prix. But how closely have you been paying attention to the Brit’s glittering career? Test your nous in our Lewis Hamilton quiz

Lewis Hamilton crowned Formula 1 World Champion for the fifth time in his career

Lewis finished fourth in the Mexican Grand Prix, which was enough to see him crowned Formula 1 World Champion for the fifth time in his career

What Happened?
Lewis finished the race in P4, one place ahead of Valtteri.

This was enough for Lewis to wrap up the Driver’s World Championship. It is the second year in a row that he has done so in Mexico.

What Did We Learn?
"Lewis' fifth world championship, his fourth with Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport - in a season which has tested all of us to the limit, considering that our car has not always had the pace to win from the front."

"Lewis' contribution to keep us in the fight and to carve out his very, very well deserved championship will go down in history as one of the great performances in our sport."

What We’re Saying
"Usually, we don't acknowledge greatness until someone's career is over, but we need to take a moment to recognise its presence - Lewis has now equalled Fangio's record and there aren't many like him out there!" said Toto.

"Lewis has been the differentiator this season - our car was the fastest at times, but not always; sometimes, like today, it was only the third-fastest. And yet Lewis' performance was always was very stable, his race craft was absolutely great."

"It has always been one of his strengths, but this year it was definitely one of the key factors of his success. We're very happy about Lewis' fifth drivers' title and our fifth in a row as a team, but the job is not done yet."

"There's a constructors' championship out there that we still want to win and that won't be easy as we saw today. We had a very bad race, we really struggled with the tyres, I don't think we actually switched the tyres on today."

"We don't know yet what the issue was, but we will dig deep, put the finger in the wound and find out why we struggled so much. Now all our focus is on the constructors' championship, we need to perform strongly in Brazil and make sure we keep pushing until the end."

I want to say a big thank you to my team
I want to say a big thank you to my team
"This is a very humbling experience!"

"Honestly, it's very hard to realise it at the moment. It's something I dreamed of, but I never in a million years thought I'd be standing here today a five-time World Champion," said Lewis.

"I never knew that was going to happen and I am just so grateful to everyone who has helped me be here. I want to say a big thank you to all the fans here for making the Mexican Grand Prix as special as it is."

"And I want to say a big thank you to my team. Bono said on the radio - the Championship wasn't won here, it was won through a lot of hard work and through a lot of races."

"So, I am so grateful for all the hard work back home, for PETRONAS, for all our partners and ultimately for Mercedes. I have been with Mercedes since I was 13, so to achieve the same thing Fangio had done with Mercedes so many years ago, is an incredible feeling and very surreal at the moment."

"I was just trying to hold on and bring the car home. Honestly, I am just so grateful. To my family back home, I love you, thank you for all the support."

"I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for all the hard work my dad did and my family. This is a very humbling experience!"

Dr. Dieter Zetsche pays tribute to the newly-crowned five-time F1 World Champion, Lewis Hamilton

It all came to a climax on Sunday afternoon when Lewis crossed the line in fourth place, sealing his fifth Formula One World Drivers’ Championship.

Watching the action were thousands of enthusiastic spectators on the packed grandstands in Mexico and millions of fans glued to their TV screens at home.

Among the latter was Dr. Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars.

"Congratulations to Lewis Hamilton and the entire Mercedes team,“ he said. „Together, you guys created something extraordinary in racing history!"

Dr Zetsche has closely followed Lewis's career development, especially since he joined the Mercedes F1 team in 2013. "With Lewis joining our team, the most recent era of Mercedes success in motorsport began - now crowned by five Drivers' World Championships in a row for the team, four of them with Lewis."

"Even as the success grew, Lewis never stopped pushing himself to get even better. And, so did the team, again and again. It's incredible what they have achieved and how far they have come thanks to tremendous passion, hard work and a lot of outstanding expertise."

Lewis talks tough Championship battles, picking up a remarkable fifth title

He's done it: Lewis is the FIA Formula One World Drivers' Champion for 2018!

It's a feeling that will take some time to sink in: "Right now, it just doesn't feel real. I feel like I'm going to wake up in a matter of moments.

"It's been such a difficult year and such a great battle but a lot of work. I really worked hard to make sure I've had the right energy, the right balance in my life and this year, working on all these different aspects to enable myself to perform better.

"I think I had a great year last year and I was thinking to myself, 'how can I raise the bar, how can I squeeze some more out of myself?'

"Honestly, you never know what the formula is, and there is no secret formula, but somehow I managed to find that balance and that flow and I've had some of my best races of my career, and I think that's ultimately why I'm sitting here."

'Fangio is the godfather'

After winning his fifth World Championship title, Lewis now belongs to a select group of drivers who have won five or more World Championships. Inevitably, many fans and journalists wonder if he may even be the GOAT - Greatest Of All Time. Lewis takes a more modest view...

"Firstly, I could never ever personally classify myself as the best. Obviously, within myself, I know of my abilities and where I stand but ultimately... My Dad always told me, 'do your talking on the track.' So, I just try to let my results do the talking.

"Now I can strike out one of the things that I put on my list of the year. It's always at the top: win the world title, do everything for that."

With seven world titles and 91 wins, record Championship winner Michael Schumacher still reigns supreme at the top of the all-time leaderboard.

"Michael's still quite far ahead in race wins, so you have to say he is still the GOAT," says Lewis. "Fangio, I think, is the godfather and always will be, from a driver's perspective. To do what he did at that time when everything was so dangerous... my respect is so high for him.

"I feel very honoured to have my name alongside his, that's for sure and naturally just very proud to have the Hamilton name up there."

'This is definitely the proudest moment'

"I would say this year, for me, from memory, this feels the proudest. This is definitely the proudest moment, because there's been a year when we've not had the fastest car at the majority of the races.
