Ciara Won Best Hair of the Night at the Met Gala
Ciara Won Best Hair of the Night at the Met Gala
The superstar singer and dancer wore a custom Peter Dundas emerald green gown

Ciara took home the award for biggest and best hair look of the night at the 2019 Met Gala. Okay, so no actual awards were handed out, but it's what she deserves for her killer ultra-voluminous afro that shut down the red carpet.

The superstar singer and dancer wore a custom Peter Dundas emerald green gown complete with cut-outs and lined with hundreds of ostrich feathers. She accentuated her hair with two jeweled clips secured just above her ears.

The internet went wild for Ciara's major Met Gala hair moment, with celebrities like Khloe Kardashian even chiming in about her look:

It wasn't the only bold and beautiful hair look Ciara wore on Monday. Earlier in the day she showed off a similar hair texture on Instagram, but instead pulled tight into two buns on either side of her head. She let down all that gorgeous texture later in the night when she officially hit the red carpet in her final look.

On April 27, the singer shared a video of her natural hair length on Instagram, promising she would share the "secrets later" for how she made it grow. "The first time I got a relaxer when I was young, it took out my hair. I was devastated," she captioned the video. "I never thought my hair would grow back. So proud."

The Seattle Seahawks quarterback and his Grammy-winning wife will focus on inspirational and aspirational stories across a variety of genres through Why Not You Productions.

On the Saturday before Super Bowl LIII, Russell Wilson was tucked away in a VIP lounge space in an industrial warehouse, sitting on a velvet sofa and opening up about the Hollywood ambitions he shares with wife Ciara.

“When people look at me, I hope they don’t just see a football player.”
"When people look at me, I hope they don’t just see a football player. I hope they see a person who is innovative and creative, someone who builds something from nothing," he told The Hollywood Reporter on a break from making the rounds inside the Wheels Up tailgate event Feb. 2. "We want to be able to impact lives. That’s what we want to do at the end of the day — even from the kids space. We just want to tell stories that connect with the world and to the emotions."

“I hope they see a person who is innovative and creative”
Wilson and Ciara have taken a big step towards that goal. The couple has announced the formation of Why Not You Productions, a company that will focus on creating film, television and digital content projects — both scripted and unscripted — that will include, but not be limited to, "inspiring and aspiring narratives and human interest stories," per the announcement.

“We are both storytellers at heart”
“While we work in different fields in our day-to-day, we are excited to come together to collaborate and create stories that we hope will touch people’s lives,” said Wilson and Ciara in a joint statement. “We are both storytellers at heart and we want to be able to share stories that uplift people and inspire others to create positive change. That’s ultimately what we want this company to represent.”

Ciara runs Beauty Marks Entertainment (BME),
In doing so, Wilson and Ciara will expand upon the work they've been doing through their joint foundation, the youth empowerment-focused Why Not You Foundation. They will continue to operate that organization along with their respective side businesses. Ciara runs her own entertainment company and record label, Beauty Marks Entertainment (BME), while Wilson heads West2East Empire (W2E), a brand management, creative content and production company. The duo will no doubt get a boost from their reps, CAA, Untitled Entertainment's Jason Weinberg and chief global brad officer Jordan Dinenberg of W2E. Wilson is additionally repped by sports agent and attorney Mark Rodgers.

Wilson heads West2East Empire (W2E)
Wilson has already been in the headlines this month. Close to two weeks ago, ESPN reported that Wilson had signed a massive four-year, $140 million extension that includes a $65 million signing bonus to make him the highest-paid player in the NFL. The deal will keep Wilson with the Seahawks through the 2023 season. As for Ciara, she continues to stay in the news and will likely do so even more when she takes the stage this week in Las Vegas at the Billboard Music Awards.

Russell Wilson Deciding to Stay with the Seattle Seahawks Was a 'Process'
Ciara Says Husband Russell Wilson Deciding to Stay with the Seattle Seahawks Was a 'Process'
"It really went down to the wire, and you just don't know what's gonna happen until that very last second"

For Russell Wilson, opting to stay on as quarterback of the Seattle Seahawks wasn’t a cut-and-dry decision — even given the substantial paycheck.

Russell Wilson, the highest-paid player in the NFL
The football star’s wife, musician Ciara, stopped by Watch What Happens Live on Tuesday night to open up to Andy Cohen about her husband’s freshly signed $140 million contract, revealing that a lot of thought actually went into the deal that has now made him the highest-paid player in the NFL.

“You know, it was a process,”
“You know, it was a process,” said Ciara, 33. “It really went down to the wire, and you just don’t know what’s gonna happen until that very last second.”

The “Goodies” hitmaker also indirectly addressed buzz that Wilson, 30, was thinking about transferring to the New York Giants, saying, “There were a lot of rumors, but we love being Seahawks. Seattle’s amazing. It’s family. It’s ‘Go Hawks’ for life. This is a special time for us, and we’re glad to know that Seattle is continuing to be home.”

Ciara Says She’s a “Better Woman” Because of Husband Russell Wilson: “That’s What Marriage Is About”

Wilson accepted a four-year, $140 million extension deal
Wilson accepted a four-year, $140 million extension deal to remain with the Seahawks, his agent Mark Rodgers revealed to the Associated Press on Tuesday.

“Russell’s goal and his hope was that he would continue his career with the Seahawks and continue to bring championships to this town,” Mark told the AP. “He believes there is still unfinished business and he is looking forward to pursuing that without having to worry about contracts and his future.”

It also comes with a $65 million signing bonus
His previous $87.6 million, four-year deal — which he signed in 2015 — was set to expire after next season. With the new agreement, Wilson will remain with the Seahawks through the 2023 season. It also comes with a $65 million signing bonus, a $107 million in guaranteed money and a very important no-trade clause, according to the AP.

“Soooo proud of my love @DangeRussWilson,” Ciara wrote
“Soooo proud of my love @DangeRussWilson,” Ciara wrote. “So excited Seattle is home! God is so good. The hardest working man I know! You inspire me so much! #GoHawks @Seahawks.”

Ciara says ‘I prayed for a God-fearing man’ and God sent Russell
Ciara says ‘I prayed for a God-fearing man’ and God sent Russell
Love and Marriage

Folks want to know what kind of powerful prayer GRAMMY® Award-winning mononymous singer, Ciara, prayed to God that manifested her sold-out-to-Jesus, successful NFL quarterback husband—Russell Wilson—in her life.

I prayed for a God-fearing man
“I’ll tell you a few things that I did pray: I prayed for a God-fearing man; I prayed for discernment; I prayed for wisdom,” said the 33-year-old during a sit-down interview with The Angie Martinez Show.

Before true love found the young boss, who is CEO of her newly launched company, Beauty Marks Entertainment, she was sick and tired of being hurt and mistreated in the love department—which eventually left her alone, broken, and discouraged.

“One of the most challenging times in my life [that] was new for me was obviously being a single mom. That was something that I didn’t expect to happen in my life at that time. I kind of grew up with both mom and dad,” the now happy wife and mother of two explained. “That’s what I knew. That was the vision that I saw—the mom and dad that makes [the] baby, and is together with baby, and that’s what it’s supposed to be.”

But that was not to be for her—at least not back then.

Ciara’s former fiancé, Nayvadius Wilburn, known as Future, with whom she shares a son, Future Zahir Wilburn, broke off their engagement in 2014, amid rumors that the rapper cheated on the songstress—something he denied. Whatever happened, one thing is certain: the public split devastated Ciara.

“I know that all of that made me better,” said Ciara.
“I know that all of that made me better,” said Ciara. “I became stronger through that experience, and that experience, it felt like it was a scar at the time. It felt like it was ugly, and it wasn’t the prettiest thing when I was going through it. But when I was able to stop and reflect and be in a better place, I realized— I smiled actually— when I reflected back on life’s challenges, and I was like, that was a beauty mark.”

"when I reflected back on life’s challenges, I was like, that was a beauty mark”
After that troubling season ended, Ciara said she learned her lesson, worked on loving herself more, and earnestly prayed to God for what she truly wanted in a man.

“I prayed for a man that loved kids
“I prayed for a man that loved kids, because obviously for me having my son—that was, if you’re going to love me, you’ve got to love him. I prayed for a man that was worldly as well, because I love to explore, so someone that’s going to edify my world is important to me. I was ready to level up,” she said.

It seems that the Lord answered her.

With a big smile, before a live studio audience, Ciara proclaimed, “God is good!”

Grammy Winner Ciara's Secret To Balancing Ambition & Motherhood
Grammy Winner Ciara's Secret To Balancing Ambition & Motherhood
She’s a songwriter, producer, model, actress, dancer, philanthropist and Grammy Award winning singer

the job she cherishes most is that of mom to Future, and Sienna
Is there anything Ciara can’t do? She’s a songwriter, producer, model, actress, dancer, philanthropist and Grammy Award winning singer who’s sold over 23 million albums worldwide. But the job she cherishes most is that of mom to son Future, four, and daughter Sienna, one. Not that she finds it easy to balance her fierce professional ambition with her equally fierce determination to be the best mom and wife — to Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson — she can be.

Fresh off a pre-Mother’s Day visit to the Children's Bureau, an LA nonprofit dedicated to preventing child abuse & neglect, where she sang nursery rhymes, handed out books to the kids, and gifted moms with jewelry from Pandora’s Mother’s Day Collection, Ciara shares how she manages to achieve her most balanced — and satisfying — life.
There are many challenges of motherhood! But balance is probably the greatest challenge
There are many challenges of motherhood! But balance is probably the greatest challenge because I’m very ambitious and determined to achieve my goals, and that takes a lot of work in itself. And then the job of being a mom is a whole different animal, too. I love being there with my kids, I don't want to miss out on anything, and so I'm constantly thinking, how do I balance it all out? Because both things require full attention and effort.

Kids change your life in the best way possible
There's never really the perfect time to have kids, but I will say that things have a way of working themselves out, and you'll figure it all out. Kids change your life in the best way possible. They give you perspective about what truly matters, and they make life so much better and more fun. I feel more empowered now than ever, so yeah, don't be afraid of living. Because you really are living life when you decide to create life. That's your legacy

Coghlan: What do you hope for your daughter?

If you believe in your dream, you can make it happen
Ciara: I hope that she can see through me that you can do anything you put your mind to, and you're not limited by your gender, and nothing will get in your way if you don't let it . If you believe in your dream, you can make it happen. I remember signing a recording contract when I was six months pregnant with her, and there was something really inspiring and empowering about that.

Ciara and Her Versace-Clad Son Are the Best-Dressed Duo
Ciara and Her Versace-Clad Son Are the Best-Dressed Duo at the Billboard Music Awards
Billboard Music Awards Red Carpet

The sweetest moment on the red carpet at tonight’s Billboard Music Awards came when Ciara turned up with a very cute and very well-dressed date. The “Level Up” singer brought her 4-year-old son, Future, with her to the show, and while she looked glamorous in a black gown with an embellished deep V-neck and a sculptural shoulder from Stéphane Rolland, her little man nearly stole the spotlight.

Dressed in a gold-and-black printed Versace tracksuit, white sneakers, and a pair of sharp sunglasses, Future Jr. had major kiddie swag as he posed for the cameras and put up a peace sign while holding his mom’s hand.

Ciara, who is performing a brand-new song (titled “Thinkin Bout You”) at the show tonight, looked on proudly while her stylish offspring showed off his designer fit.

This wasn’t the first time little Future has walked a red carpet, and it certainly showed. Growing up with two musicians for parents, he has already come to be a natural in front of the cameras when it comes to pulling off a bold fashion look.

In fact, he seems to take after his always-chic mom in that department, and tonight they were officially the coolest duo at this year’s Billboard Music Awards.

Ciara Brings Yeehaw Style to Cannes
Ciara is the latest to tip her ten gallon hat to the Wild West

Ciara proved herself to be most fashionable cowgirl in Cannes.

It’s already been two years since Raf Simons sent silky Western-style shirts down the Calvin Klein Spring 2018 runway at New York Fashion Week. Now the glam cowboy trend he perfected that season is spreading far beyond and wide. Whether it’s due to the ubiquity of Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road” or the influence of Post Malone’s Nudie-suit evoking wardrobe, people are taking Western wear to every corner of the globe.

Ciara is the latest to tip her ten gallon hat to the Wild West while traveling abroad. Performing at the annual advertising conference the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, the artist brought a full-out glam cowboy look to the French Riviera, of all places. The singer posed in glossy wide-legged high-rise pants which she paired with a black button-down shirt that was neatly knotted at her waist. She topped it all off with a black cowboy hat, naturally. Where other celebrities do their best to evoke so-called French girl style on the famed Riviera, Ciara proved herself to be most fashionable cowgirl in Cannes.

Ciara, Russell Wilson, and the kids had a blast in Cannes before Sunday night’s BET Awards. The Wilsons met up with the Ohanians for loads of fun.

Ciara uploaded a video clip of her and Sienna enjoying the inside pool with Serena Williams and little Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr. “The moments I cherish,” Ciara captioned underneath the sweet footage. “@serenawilliams and I with our girls in Cannes.” Both Sienna and Alexis Olympia were excited to explore the water.

Another post from Ciara and the family’s time in Cannes showed the celebrity mom taking a weekend walk with her daughter and husband. “Daddy’s Girls,” Ciara hashtagged. “Take us for a walk and Pizza in Cannes, Papa,” the celebrity mom captioned.

Ciara has been going non-stop for some time now.
Ciara has been going non-stop for some time now. “It’s all a blur,” the ‘Beauty Marks’ singer said at the BET Awards this past Sunday (June 23). “Like, honestly, I’ve been telling my team, I’m like, ‘Look, I’m just going one day at a time.’ So I don’t even know where I’m going to be tomorrow, but I’m here today,” she added. Ciara told the press that she was planning to head back to Seattle for a charity event hosted by her and Russell Wilson’s non-profit, “Why Not You?”

“I know tonight I’m going back to Seattle,” the singer said. “I’ll be in Seattle tomorrow,” CiCi added. “We have our Wilson’s Celebrity Invitational that my husband and I have for our ‘Why Not You?’ Foundation. We’ll be doing that good stuff tomorrow and I’ll be performing.”

There is much to love and respect about Ciara
There is much to love and respect about Ciara who prides herself on hard work and diligence. “It’s a blessing,” the ‘Level Up’ singer said of her life. “It’s what I call organized chaos. I was telling one of my friends, ‘I want to kind of journal some of the moments that have been happening in my life.’ Sometimes you have to pause and really realize what’s happening. And I can’t lie. I’m having the time of my life these days.”

I’m having the time of my life these days.”
Do Ciara’s kids, Future Zahir and Sienna, know all of what their mom’s job entails? “I think that my son is starting to figure it out,” the singer revealed during Sunday’s BET Awards red carpet interview. “My daughter is aware to some extent, but she’s just two [years old]. They see when we’re out and about and people call our names … They’re recognizing that something is happening.”

Ciara: More Powerful Than Ever
Ciara: More Powerful Than Ever
He also, "loves sports and has a great arm, he can throw really well."

Ciara won't say when she's due, only that she has two babies on the way. "I got this baby and my album," she laughs, rubbing her hands over her belly, which is extra round under horizontal stripes. At what looks like seven months pregnant, Ciara Princess Wilson, an R&B celebrity the waiters here treat like royalty, is wearing a tight tonal-striped jersey minidress, slip-on sneakers, a Chanel tote, and zero makeup. We are at the Hotel Bel-Air in Upper West Los Angeles. On the way, my Lyft driver asked if I was going to meet the Fresh Prince. I replied, "Better—a Princess."

"I got this baby and my album," she laughs,
Lately, too much of Ciara's press has been bound to her acrimonious breakup with Future, a troublingly hot-cause-he-knows-it rapper born Nayvadius DeMun Wilburn. They also have a baby together—also named Future. But Ciara has no interest in talking about her past relationship, because she isn't one to dwell. And why should she? She cut things off romantically with Future in 2014 and moved on; within two years she was married and pregnant with a new man. Her husband, Russell Wilson, is a quarterback for the Seattle Seahawks, and, at 28, is three years younger than his wife.

When talking about Wilson, Ciara's elocution is dotted with ellipses and hyperbole.
When talking about Wilson, Ciara's elocution is dotted with ellipses and hyperbole. Their relationship is, "even greater… just… so… amazing… awesome… It really is." One of the greatest things about Russell, Ciara shares, is how he supports her: "When you know they're going to be your champion, always in the corner..." I joke that her quarterback is a cheerleader, and she agrees. It's too rare to have straight men back us up, I say.

"If someone's not supporting you and your vision and your dreams," then you've got to make sure to keep it moving
"If someone's not supporting you and your vision and your dreams," Ciara agrees, "—whether it's your relationship partner, your friend, whomever, then you've got to make sure to keep it moving. If people aren't lifting you up, even if you're the strongest person in the world, eventually it does chip away at you. You don't even realize that you're losing yourself. And that's the scariest place to be in life… I don't want to lose myself. I love myself too much. I love life too much."

Ciara calls herself tough, but admits her definition of tough has changed
Ciara calls herself tough, but admits her definition of tough has changed: "Before, tough was kind of like, if something happened that was wrong, I'd just keep moving." It's something she learned early on, as an army brat. "It was a bit of a challenge," she says, "you would build friendships, then you'd have to say goodbye." "I do think part of that made me kind of tough," she admits. "Emotionally tough. The truth of it is, it helped me with being able to accept cutting things off… Which I think is a good thing, maybe it could be a bad thing, because it can make you cold in that way."

Today, she's come to realize that being vulnerable is a form of strength.
Today, she's come to realize that being vulnerable is a form of strength. "Once you're able to really be truly truthful with yourself, it's life changing," she says. "You have way more compassion than you imagine, you're sensitive to the right things." Ciara learned the strength in vulnerability, she tells me, through the birth of her first son. Baby Future taught her patience, "above all."

Baby Future is all over Ciara's phone. She shows me a video of him singing in a car seat dressed in streetwear the boys of Fairfax Avenue would save up and wait in line for. At 2, Future Jr. is already memorizing the stories his mom reads to him and dancing and singing on key. (At bath time, it's Outkast's "So fresh and so clean clean.")

He also, "loves sports and has a great arm, he can throw really well
He also, "loves sports and has a great arm, he can throw really well—it's bananas," says his mom. And he's looking forward to being a big brother. "He'll randomly pull my shirt up and be like, 'I want to see the baby,'" Ciara says. "'Hello, baby. How you doing, baby? I love you, baby. Okay, talk to you later, baby. Bye, bye.' Then he'll kiss me on my belly and put my shirt back down."

Ciara has landed her first Vogue cover with Vogue Arabia’s February 2019 issue. On the breathtaking Arabic and English front pages, the entertainer wears a bohemian Saint Laurent dress and an Alexandre Vauthier hat, being joined on set by magnificent stallions belonging to UAE royal HH Sheikha Fatima Rashed Al Maktoum. The cover was shot in Dubai by fashion photographer Mariano Vivanco.

The postcard-worthy photo shoot is accompanied by a candid interview, in which the “Level Up” singer opens up about fame, family, and facing her fears. The Grammy-winner also declares that her hotly anticipated seventh album, to be released this year, is one of her “best works ever.”

“I’m super excited and my vision for this project is to inject love into the world with dance,” she explains. This is not like any other album, as most of the work in studio was done while Ciara was eight months pregnant with her second child, daughter Sienna, the result of her marriage to NFL quarterback Russell Wilson. “There was something really special about that. Being a mother of two made me feel even more confident, inspired, and fearless,” she shares, when asked if motherhood reshaped her as an artist.

Good Things Come In Threes: Iman, Teyana Taylor, And Ciara Cover ESSENCE
I believe there’s always an opportunity to grow and learn something new

This month's multi-talented cover stars are carving paths of their own and opening up about the moment they changed course

the prayerful survive.
She’s answered to a higher calling ever since she discovered that singing and dancing were as natural to her as breathing and walking. Now Ciara is a happily married mom of two, and her life is a testament to the fact that the prayerful survive.

“ultimately works itself out if you believe.”
In the three years and handful of months since her first ESSENCE cover story, so much has changed for the 33-year-old Grammy winner. Back in May 2016, when she posed for us with Future Zahir, her son with Atlanta rapper Future, she was gearing up to say “I do” to Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson. A year later, the Wilson party of three became four with the arrival of a daughter, Sienna Princess (mother and daughter share a middle name).

These changes have been good for Ciara. You can see it in her smile, sense it from her glow and even hear it in her infectious hit “Level Up”—the video garnered more than 178 million YouTube views and sparked an international dance challenge. Her still-unfolding journey is proof that everything “ultimately works itself out if you believe.”

“My faith has carried me through every challenge and triumph,”
Since then there have been more hits than misses and a messy public split and ensuing custody battle with Future. “My faith has carried me through every challenge and triumph,” she reflects. “When I was younger and wanting things to happen when I wanted them to happen, I could never have imagined that 15 years later I’d be having the time of my life.”

“keeping my sexy up too.”
So what’s the next level for her these days? Ciara laughs at the question, but she’s got an answer. “I’m trying to keep getting better, make health-conscious decisions and be the best mom and wife I can be,” she says. “No matter how much success you have, I believe there’s always an opportunity to grow and learn something new. And I’m keeping my sexy up too.” Duly noted.

the power of a great wig and #BlackGirlMagic

Ciara is a hair chameleon. One day she’s wearing thirty-inch extensions and a towering topknot the next. In the same fashion, she switched out her curly ponytail for a new hairdo, but this one might shock you.

At Monday’s Accessories Council Excellence (ACE) Awards in New York City, the Beauty Mark singer ’s short pixie cut made a red carpet debut. Her short crop shocked fans on social media, and us too. Following the annual awards ceremony where Ciara was presented with the ACE Style Icon Award, the mom of two took to Instagram to show off her new ‘do.

While we’ve seen the face-framing crop on countless celebrities including icons like Toni Braxton, Angela Bassett, and Halle Berry, no one was prepared to see it on CiCi.

While the world is wondering how she did it, we’re chalking Ciara’s quick change up to the power of a great wig and #BlackGirlMagic.

Extension 411: The Secret to Every Hollywood and Instagram Star’s Perfect Hairs
Hair extensions are a great hair accessory

Hair extensions are a great hair accessory. They allow you to try a new ‘do with little commitment. You can go from long to short or short to long and back again. You can experiment with colors or textures different from your own. Or you can use them to add volume to beef up a skimpy mane.

Some women wear extensions as a protective style while transitioning from chemically processed hair to their natural hair texture, so as not to compromise their healthy hair goals in the process. “The trend of wearing curly/textured extensions really ties into the overall natural hair movement and the desire by women to have options that fit within, rather than disrupt, their personal style choices,” says Ngozi Opara, certified hair manufacturer and founder of Heat Free Hair.

Others, such as celebrities, models and entertainers may wear extensions as a protective means to shield their hair from the daily stresses that it endures on a film set, photo studio or stage. Whatever your reasons for wearing extensions, choosing the right type for your needs and maintaining them properly is key.

Celebrity Hair Extensions

The truth is extensions still abound in Hollywood—it’s just that they look so good that you would never know they are even there. Look at a coffee table full of glossies covered with A-listers and their impossibly shiny, voluminous, and ever-glamorous long hair. You can go ahead and stop comparing your hair to theirs right now because I’m going to tell you a secret: Just about every single one of them has extensions (or a wig, in many cases).

“It’s 2017. If you’re not born with the hair you want, buy it.” With those words in mind, I decided to shed my expectations and give 2018’s extensions a try.

I have struggled with volume and length since my early 20s and have tried just about every hair-growth supplement under the sun—with no success. So if this is what the celebrity, supermodel, and Instagram starlets are doing to get their luscious locks, why not give it a shot?

Enter Amanda Scott at Serge Normant at John Frieda's New York salon.
When I arrived for my consultation at the salon, which counts Sarah Jessica Parker, Julia Roberts, and Blake Lively among its clientele, one of the first things Amanda asked me as she assessed my hair, was: “How committed are you to this? What are your goals?”

extensions are indeed a commitment
Amanda explained to me that extensions are indeed a commitment. (We’re not talking about the kind you can buy in a drug store.) For anyone who is going to get extensions or already has them, it should be a red flag if your specialist does not do a consultation in which they lay out your options in terms of types of extensions and the care they will require, as well as the details of the pricing. (Be warned: They can cost thousands of dollars).

financial investment
“I think a lot of women dive into the world of extensions without fully thinking about the financial investment required and the amount of maintenance that will be needed,” says Scott. “Also, people should be careful about who they choose to work with. A thorough consultation with a stylist will help determine if that person is right for you. Hair extensions have a bad reputation as damaging, and that can be true if you work with the wrong person.”

Amanda, who does two types of extensions: Klix, Easihair Pro
I’m not the type of girl who goes for blowouts every other day or even every week. (Who has that kind of time?) My typical hair routine involves shampoo, conditioner, a spritz of sea salt spray, and perhaps a flirtation with a curling iron, so I decided I wanted the hair that required the smallest time commitment on my end and could last for about six months. (You can get them taken out whenever you want, but it’s good to know when deciding what kind you get to know whether you want to have extensions for a year or more, or just a few months). Amanda, who does two types of extensions—Klix, which can last up to six months with consecutive wear, and Easihair Pro, which can last up to a year with good care—patiently listened to my long list of silly questions and wisely suggested that I go with Klix.

Klix, made of 100 percent virgin Remy human hair
At my next appointment, I had the long hair I had always wanted—and had not had since I was probably a teenager—in about an hour. Klix, made of 100 percent virgin Remy human hair, comes in all different shades and Amanda had expertly picked out a blonde that mixed in well with my array of highlights. (Giancarlo Carollo, a hair-color genius at Serge Normant at John Frieda, also worked his magic to blend my colors so it was a perfect combination of ashy and gold tones to make it all look natural.) The hair comes in pieces that are placed discreetly near the scalp and attached to strands of your natural hair with no tape or glue required, meaning they are supposed to be non-damaging.

Not all hair extensions are created equal
“Not all hair extensions are created equal,” says Scott. “Individual extensions (like Great Lengths, for example) will most certainly cause damage to the hair. With any type of application like that, as the extension grows out, it can twist and cause breakage because it doesn’t lie flat and isn’t wide enough to prevent rotating. Some names for that kind of application are beads, cold fusion, microfusion, microtips, glue tips, bonds, and strand-by-strand.”

I’ll admit, when Amanda was first putting the extensions in, I was slightly terrified only because the hair comes really long (like Cher-hair long). But after she trimmed my hair and Giancarlo colored it, I was feeling confident in my once-mousy-and-unremarkable-turned-Hollywood-ready hair.

maintenance
Before I left, Amanda made sure to give me the full run-through on maintenance. “Try to wash your hair in the morning and let it air dry if you can. If you can’t do that, try not to brush it too much when it’s wet; blow dry it first and then comb it out with a Wet Brush just like you would with your normal hair,” she said. (Hair is most elastic when it’s wet, making it more prone to stretching and breaking.) If you don’t have a Wet Brush, she suggests a paddle brush. Avoid a boar brush.` and whatever you do, don’t use a T3 or a Dyson blow dryer, as they produce too much heat, according to Scott.

It took some time to adjust to my hair and the care it required. It soon became clear what Amanda meant about commitment.

commitment
For starters, blow drying my hair took twice as long as I was used to. I carefully braided my hair each night to protect the hair from tangling or breaking while I slept. I diligently took my 10,000 micrograms of biotin each day to help my own hair, used Snob Girls Body Dense bio-serum conditioning capsules (as Amanda says, extension hair loves leave-in conditioner), and used John Frieda Miraculous Recovery conditioning products regularly. Every four weeks or so, I visited Amanda to have the extensions tightened and adjusted. The process was usually quick and painless and I was out of the salon in about an hour or less. A few times, my hair got knotted around the extensions, but even that was a surprisingly easy fix.

financial investment
Gorgeous locks are not only a commitment but also a financial investment. The Klix hair itself costs anywhere from $750 (half pack) to $1,400 (full pack; price includes the hair, initial installation, and a haircut). Depending on how well you take care of it, it can last up to six months (mine did) until it needs to be replaced with a new set of Klix. Plus, the maintenance every four to six weeks costs $200 to $300 each time. If you go with Easihair Pro Tape-in Extensions, which last up to a year, installation ranges from $300 to $700 (price determined by hair length and the amount of hair). Maintenance for those, which is every eight to 10 weeks, costs anywhere from $300 to $700 each time.

I couldn’t bear to part ways with my new long-hair look
Once I got the hang of washing and brushing my hair extensions, (and started allotting the extra time to actually style it), I nearly forgot the hair extensions were there. At least in the sense that they weren’t much more of a struggle than my normal hair. Roughly six months later, it was time to either take them out or put new ones in. I couldn’t bear to part ways with my new long-hair look, so Amanda put in a new set of Klix. As she took out the old set and put in the new set, I was scared to look at the condition of my own hair.

From day one, Amanda was committed to my bigger hair goals, beyond just the instant fix of hair extensions. I had followed her instructions to help with the growth of my own hair and taken better care of my hair than ever before. All of that effort paid off.

"Look how long your hair is! It’s growing and healthy," Amanda reported.

As she put the new set of hair extensions in, I felt excited about my hair journey ahead. Vain as it may sound, it’s a pretty empowering thing to feel confident in your hair.

Learning how to bleach your hair is no mean feat
Learning how to bleach your hair is no mean feat, and it’s not for the faint-hearted. It is a lengthy, meticulous process and not an area where one size fits all. Far from it – some hair types take to colour with no hassle, absorbing multiple tones within minutes, while others will take hours upon hours in salon or out to achieve the desired finish. But once you know the basic rules on how to bleach hair responsibly to produce the best finish, that sought-after platinum white or blonde colour is right at your fingertips.

Vogue’s checklist before bleaching hair:
1. Have you had any chemical treatments in the last six months? If so, have you trimmed away the treated hair or has it grown out? Any remnants of the chemical can compromise your final colour.

2. Make sure your hair is in good condition before you start. Bleach can be very stripping on the hair, so it’s important to use plenty of conditioning masks and treatments. For two weeks in the run-up to bleaching, apply a mask every other night. Vogue recommends Kérastase Elixir Ultime Masque or Living Proof Restore Mask Treatment.

3. Never-coloured-before hair that is light brown or lighter can be treated in one session, while darker hair will take multiple sessions. “The process really depends on the hair type, but a bleach on virgin hair will need bleaching on the ends first leaving an inch or so regrowth, then allowing this to lift for up to an hour and then bleaching roots to match,” says Shannon Gallacher, bleaching expert at Nicola Clarke for John Frieda.

4. Don’t bleach freshly washed hair as a scalp stripped of natural oils can get irritated.

How to bleach your hair in a salon (what to ask your colourist)
1. Ask for a sample strip, especially if you have coloured your hair before as this may affect the final result.

2. Be prepared to visit again. “Roots need less time than ends as the heat from the head speeds up the process,” explains Gallacher. “Once the hair has an even tone, the bleach is rinsed off and toned to the desired shade, but some hair will need more than one service to achieve the colour wanted.”

3. After you have bleached your hair with an expert, follow with an in-salon Olaplex treatment to immediately inject as much hydration as possible.

Ciara: More Powerful Than Ever

She's been craving oranges and ice water, and for a touch of caffeine, she drinks green Japanese tea—a pot of which is served while we wait for our lunch. She asks the waiter if he speaks any Japanese, in Japanese. He's from Oaxaca, so she switches to Spanish. Ciara speaks a little Chinese and Swahili, too. "I made this deal with myself," she goes, "that whenever I travel, and there's a foreign language, I must pick something up. I love learning languages. It's also a way of paying respect to my international fans." Ciara has been world touring since her first album—released in 2004 when she was just 19—went triple platinum.

She asks the waiter if he speaks any Japanese, in Japanese
Five years before that, Ciara made a goal sheet because, "you can do whatever you want if you believe in it—period." A freshman at Georgia's Riverdale High, the rumored namesake of Betty and Veronica's iconic comic high school, Ciara cheerlead. She also ran track, "but I wasn't breaking records so I was like, 'This isn't realistic, it's not going be my job.'" She knew she wanted to be an entertainer, and that she had a special gift to sing and dance; so through the power of manifestation she sought to "make something happen… a real thing."
The goals she wrote were threefold.
The goals she wrote were threefold. First, she'd get discovered. Next, she'd sign a deal, make an album, and sell 3 to 4 million copies. Which she did. "I signed my first label at 16-years-old," Ciara recounts, "put out my first album at 19, and I sold, not just 3 to 4, but 5 million records." (Ciara's 2004 debut, Goodies, included three number one hits: "Goodies," "1, 2 Step," and "Oh.") "My third goal," Ciara continues, "was to have longevity.

"I want to make the world dance."
It's been 13 years since my first album release." She's in the midst of recording her highly-anticipated 7th studio album with the late Prince's label, Warner Bros. All she'll say about the album today is, "I want to make the world dance."

Backed by major labels and producers, Ciara's career had momentum from the go. (It's like her hip flexors were made for music videos.) There's one thing she feels she missed out on though: "I didn't get to go to college because of my career," Ciara says. "That's the one thing I fantasize about sometimes."

She volunteers with I Am That Girl
The day before we met, Ciara was on campus at the University of Southern California. She volunteers with I Am That Girl, an organization that helps girls to turn self-doubt in to self-love. Her role is to facilitate consciousness-raising groups wherein up to 40 girls, freshman through senior year, "talk about what they're going through—it's kind of like a circle of trust amongst women, you share the good and the bad."

Ciara will share from her own life experiences (the circle is founded in confidentiality). One message she tries to impart is, "that they're not alone in their journey, and that we all essentially experience the same things, we just have a different way to tell the story."

In a culture that attempts to incite competition among women—manufacturing internet feuds between celebrities like Beyoncé, Rihanna, and Ciara—she's learned to stay above the fray. Attentive and real, she displays a low-key wisdom and grace. Of our chaotic political climate, she says, "the world's actually coming together—we're more socially engaged than ever before."

Ciara doesn't take the bait when online trolls try to pit female artists against each other. (Twitter haters recently went so far as to try and start a pregnancy-off between her an Beyoncé.)

When you meet successful powerful women, you show each other love
Ciara says she and fellow artists mount a unified defense. "There's this unspoken word: love. When you meet successful powerful women, you show each other love, because it is a tough environment."

Ciara has a house in the neighborhood, and when I ask where she lives, she makes a fair bid for privacy. "I don't like to say where," she says, "But yes, we are very blessed to be able to have a few places to stay." One of those homes is in Seattle, which Ciara loves for its normalcy. "I can wear my sweatpants to the grocery store," she explains, "and I'm not gonna have to worry about somebody that's going to snap me looking tore up from the floor up."

Having that normalcy is vital, because besides the new album, this period of her life is all about family,

Having that normalcy is vital, because besides the new album, this period of her life is all about family, she says. "I'm just super excited about this time in my life. Like, Oh my gosh, I can see my son running around, and soon it's going to be two of these creatures running around! Our hands will be full of non-stop action."

Volume Up: How To Get Thicker Hair
Volume Up: How To Get Thicker Hair
Ciara

Do you have thin, lacklustre hair but dream of thick, glossy hair? From what to eat to the best products, cuts and colour, Vogue’s no-nonsense guide shows you how.

Aside from genetics, what causes thin hair?
Over-styling and over-colouring your hair
Heat-based styling products and bleach-laden colouring agents can strip your hair of all its strengthening fibres, leaving it weak. If you can bear to, take a break from colouring your hair and step away from the styling products. Opt for a sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner to give your hair a thorough cleanse, too, and overnight masks and oils will help to nourish the hair.

Hormonal changes
Changes in health can have a direct impact on the thickness of your hair. Fluctuations in hormones - particularly an imbalanced thyroid - can not only impact skin and weight, but also hair. Many women experience a change in their hair consistency during pregnancy. If there has a been a really dramatic change in hair thickness in a short space of time, it’s worth seeking medical advice.

Stress
Stress and trauma can have a direct impact on hair growth. The term for shock-related hair loss is telogen effluvium - a physical response to the impact of stress on the body and mind. It isn’t usually long-term, but it can take up to six months to cure. The best way to counter this? Self-care. Plenty of sleep and a diet rich in B vitamins and packed with wholegrains, protein and dark, leafy greens will help to slow down the rate of hair loss.

How can you thicken hair with products?
Shampoo/Conditioning
Formulas in thickening shampoos are now very effective, and there are plenty to choose from. The best solutions offer nourishing treatment for the hair, while lifting excess oil and product from hair shafts to stop it from getting weighed down. Vogue recommends the Aveda Invati range and Nanogen Thickening Treatment Shampoo for Women.

Brushing
Opt for a ceramic-barrel brush when blow-drying. And choose an ionic dryer that will blow out negative ions, leaving the hair smoothed and de-frizzed.

Styling
Introduce a root-lifter to your hair-styling regime. This will lift the hair further and give it a nicer fall across the face.

How can you make your hair thicker through your diet?
Supplements
Look for a great hair-stimulating multivitamin. This should be packed with keratin, the amino-acid L-lysine, soya protein, iron and vitamins B12 and D3. All of these help to contribute to your hair’s thickness.

Food types
Keep to a simple, nourishing diet full of lean proteins, leafy greens, and carrots for vitamin A.

How can you cut your hair to make it look thicker?
Don’t let hair get too long - a blunt, relatively short cut will immediately give your hair the appearance of volume and thickness. Try a sweeping fringe to disguise any thinning. And be smart about colour. Avoid anything too one-dimensional - multiple tones in highlights or lowlights will give the hair depth and avoid it looking too thin.

Trichologist Anabel Kingsley says, “thickening, strengthening protein sprays can also be helpful. They immediately add volume to the hair, giving an instant boost. They also strengthen the hair over time, which helps to reduce hair fall as the result of breakage. While breakage is not true loss from the follicle, it can thin the appearance of the mid-lengths and ends.”

Percy & Reed founder and hair stylist Adam Reed adds, “Try not to rough dry the hair as this can take the life out of it before you have even started - towel-dry hair as best as possible and then dry the hair from damp to dry.
